Q: Remember that Gateway Server 6400, it was hot a few years ago at the Hot Deals forum? Well, that machine is starting to piss me off.
Its running at 100% CPU usage. I went from XP to 2000 and still does the same. I have 3 times Reformated. I use Norton the boot sector check. Still running at 100%. I tried to do a low level again, but the point IBM will not work because it can not find this command.com.
Is maybe a hardware problem? If yes, please let me know ideas about what it is and how I can solve it.
Thanks in advance.
Best Answer: It's an authentication problem and not a service pack issue. To solve this problem you should understand how SQL server authenticates users.
SQL Server can authenticate users in one of 2 modes:
1- Windows Authentication Mode : allows a user to connect through a Microsoft Windows user account
2- Mixed Mode: allows users to connect to an instance of SQL Server using either Windows Authentication or SQL Server Authentication. Users who connect through a Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 user account can make use of trusted connections in either Windows Authentication Mode or Mixed Mode.
You should set your Server to authenticate users in the appropriate method.
To enable SQL Server to authenticate users in Mixed Mode, go to enterprise manager >> Right Click your server >> Properties >> Choose the Security Tab >> Click on SQL Server & Windows under Security / Authentication
Hope this helps.
Re:tdas2,
You are awesome. I turned that off. Re-installed win2k and CPU usage is back to normal.(going to swtich it over to XP now)
However, can you tell me what ACPI is and what negative effects will i get from disabling it?
Thanks again!
Re:i'll have to peruse that thread, its quite big.
as far as msconfig… I looked into it, and there is nothing non-MS. However, I think I forgot to mention that I am getting this abnormal CPU usuage on a raw OS install, I mean that the very second after wink2k or winXP had finished installing, I would check the Task Manager only to find that its already running at 100%.
Does that help any? or am I confusing you.
btw, thanks for the replies and help so far…you're pretty fast.
EDIT: Just ran it under "Diagnostic Startup" (aka "Safe Mode")… still runs at 100%
Re:tip: when clicking a subscriber link and you aren't one, change subscriber to forums. Sorry for not changing it the first time.
run msconfig and kill non MS services and startup items, then reboot. What happens now when viewing the task mgr?
Re:Everything under processes looks fine, except this:
System……………………..94%-99%
[its usually the 2nd to last item under proccesses]
Mem usage is minimal and stable.
I can't view that thread because it says i'm not a subscriber. Whatever that means.
Re:Have you read thru this (http://subscriber.{$MySite}/messageview.cfm?catid=27&threadid=659078&highlight_key=y&keyword1=faq) thread?
What does the task manager show as far as processes and mem usage?
