Q: Well, I was all excited for my PIII 1GHz (one of the few teeth to get 100MHz) and overclock the snot out. I can not get more than 1050 mhz! My guess it has to do with the PCI bus speeds. But my 600E was overclocked to 800, and many bus speeds between without a problem. It will not boot to anything other than 105mhz bus. Is this chip a bad overclockers? Anyone have any ideas?

Best Answer: It is most likely your HDD. It's probably partially dead. Go buy a new one and see if that works.

Re:guy and guy, what steppings do you have? What voltage? I'm amazed that you can run at 1.2GHz since, as was said, it is commonly thought that the limit for the PIII core is near 1GHz.

Re:Raised the voltage to 1.75, and am now at 1.1 ghz. Would not even boot at 1.1 before. Will have to run stability test and play a little Nascar 4 to see if it is stable.
I won't go any higher until I check stability at this speed.

Re:My P3 1GHz reached 1240 before on an Asus P3B-F with an Alpha P3125…I had it on 1.90v. I only clocked it that high when I play my games…but I live in LA and the summer heat kicked in…can't even get it past 1074. Room temps have jumped up a little more than 12-15 degrees. I don't know what happened but I even put A/C in my room and i can't overclock it anymore.
Re:As guy said, the 1GHz P3 is an extremely poor overclocker to begin with so I'm not paryicularly surprised you were only able to get 1050 out of it.
When the 1GHz P3 first became widely available I recall many of them werent even able to hit 1035MHz. The processor has matured considerably since then however, and now a decent number are able to hit close to 1.1GHz but on the whole the 1GHz P3 on .18u is very near it's limitations and unlikely to overclock at all well.

Re:The 1GHz p3 is probably the worst overclocker you can buy, it almost at the peak of what the p6 architecture can do period.
