Q: I have two different platforms and two different hard drives. Both western digitals are the SE, a 80GB one, the other a brand new 120GB not three days old. Both do the same thing, at startup, the drives stop spinning (powerdown sound like) coming back to life. They do this a few times until the system crashes and you have to reboot the system. It only started happening in the eight months old 80GB in the last week and three days old 120GB in the last days. Both on completely different computers, but the same data (FWIW). What gives? I heard the click once 80GB too.
Nonetheless, all my personal, academic and business data backup to both drives. Im on the 120GB while now and it still works ok, Ill back up everything on CD. Can anyone give me some advice?

Re:Maybe check you power management (suspend etc.) settings and see if they are ok. Some of it will be in the control panel and some of it might be in the bios.

Re:I RMA'd a brand new WD 40 gig about a month ago. Just ran their diagnostic, called tech support and got an RMA # with no questions asked. I then called the retailer who agreed to exchange it (even less of a prob).

Re:One easy way to RMA your hard drive without do any test and take too long with tech support. Because the tech will ask you do many many test before RMA. Just say your drive has clicking sound and the bois not detect the drive.

Just replace it and be done with it. Good luck, guy
WTF is that? Someone comes here for help after spending a couple hundred on drives and all you can offer is go buy a couple more. If you just want to up your post count the tech support forum is not the place to do it. People come here for advice on diagnosis and trouble shooting. If it turns out to be what guy said that would be $$$ down the drain. Not to mention both drives are still under waranty. I highly doubt WD will replace them without an error code unless the drive is completely dead and the software won't detect it. Since the 120 is only a couple of days old the store may exchange that one though.

Re:I've seen this several times before, it's usually a rail starting to go (good voltage, just not enough amps), most of the time just using a different molex connector will fix the problem…heck I just had to do that to my 1yr3mo old 80GB SE last month myself. I've seen this happen with maxtor's as well so it isn't just WD's drives that this happens to.
edit: it's a very good idea to do a full chkdsk /r afterward as their tends to be some file corruption with this issue.

Re:Download the utilities from WD and run them to test the drives. If it detects problems and will supply you with an error code. You must do this before WD will give you an rma # if that is required.

Each drive is on its own channel and powered by an Antec True380.

you PSU is overtaxed??? harddrives require double or triple power during startup. try unpluging ur slave HD, see ifyour primary will boot. up
