Q: I have 3 gigs of data I have to pay and Gmail is not exactly the best for this. Im in Indiana, shes in Georgia.
What should I do?
Re:IF the target computer is XP pro, you can talk her through forwarding the proper port and setting up RDC. Now all the configuration is on you, and you can set up whatever means you want.
IF the target computer is OS < other >, you can talk her through an install of ultravnc, and the port forwarding if necessary.
That's the route I would take, so I could get the data there, unzip or un tar it and verify.
Re:FTP, or burn a DVD + mail FTW

I would go WASTE (check sourceforge). It's a good localized P2P network, great for tossing data amongst friends. Supports, among other things, resuming files.
ive used it once before but found it quite complicated to use (and it will require some technical effort on his friend's side as well).
also from divx.com they released a private peer2peer thingy that's supposed to be easy to use (i forgot the name), might be worth looking into

no bittorent and hamachi combo will be way way way way better than ftp for one reason. the file you recive at the end is hash checked and any missing portions can be downloaded. mostly in my experiance large ftp tranfers result in some errors in the files. bittorrent eliminated that by hashing the files and also hashing pieces. that way you get the whole file and are 100 % that it is equal to the orignal.
you can easily perform a hash check yourself
and what will you do it the hash check fails.download again ?

personally i would use winrar and cut the files into 50MB chunks, then make a md5 of all of them and then transfer via FTP. this way if one or two files are messed up you can see which ones and then just re-upload those ones. this is probably the most secure way in terms of data integrity, imo.

please enlighten me why this is easier then creating a torrent.
and emailing her the torrent.
also to the OP… i think you should check out why i recommeded hamachi AND bittorrent.
hamachi creates a virtual network b/w the 2 computers (its used in gaming to simulate lan for games like quake 4). that would prevent others from accessing your torrent even if they dl it. but you can always not use hamachi and set up a tracker aaat your computer and use that and only send her the torrent.

Re:Two things you need FIOS and FTP. Once you have those two components, you'll be good to go. If you only have one of those components, the receiver needs to sit back and relax, because they aren't getting the file anytime soon. It would be faster just overnighting a DVD.

Re:FTP will be much better than BitTorrent/Messenger. If you need it really fast and your connections are not that great for sending/receiving, then the suggestion of burning it to DVD and then sending through the mail will be a good and quick alternative.

ONE WORD
HAMACHI
and bittorrent. if you need further instructions just ask,
links
http://www.hamachi.cc/
bittorrent should offer the same speeds as an ftp, considering there aren't multiple users/seeders

Re:I dont know how soon you need this data transfered, but how about burning the data to a DVD and sending it priority mail? Thats if either of you have relatively slow connections.
Re:FTP is usually the best way. Resumable / etc. You could setup the file server on your side, create an account for her and then just show her how to connect. That way she can grab as much of the file as she can whenever she has a chance and you don't have to do anything else.

Single file?
Yes, but I'm sure I could split it up.

setup an FTP server.
filezilla is pretty good.
no way to do this peer to peer?
Re:FTP? Might want to rar it into manageable chunks, too.
