98SE – Explorer crashes at introducing Windows (Shdoc401.dll) [page fault error] [invalid page fault]

Q: Hello all. :)

Ive perused numerous message boards, looking for an answer, so I hope the hard-core techies here can help me with entering out.

Immediately Win98, an error message pops up saying Explorer has crashed due to an invalid Shdoc401.dll. The people Ive seen a problem with this DLL had to create a new folder in Explorer, not immediately upon entering Windows. It seems that the consensus is that the problem is with a long / invalid registry key. However, after going through the registry on this computer, I see no suspicious keys.

I can not use a program such as Regmon calls to the registry to check, as the tree dies before one of the startup programs loaded.

I tried to restore a registry from a few days ago, but for some reason the attempts fail to restore time.

I tried to reinstall Win98 on top of what already exists, but did not (Im assuming because The registry is the problem, and Win install on top of itself does not clear the registry) 0.

The latest things to do on this computer before this problem was the installation of RealPlayer, Windows and various security updates u0026 IU (downloaded from Microsoft ) 0.

Does anyone have any possible solutions? Im desperate here. Thanks in advance! :)

Re:I had the exact same problem on another machine. Exact DLL too.. explorer would crash and I couldn't do anything. The guy who owns the computer said he was putting in updates on his machine when it happened, so I'm not exactly sure what caused it.

Let me tell you, backing up files with explorer.exe crashed is not fun!

I ended up having to format and reinstall the OS on the machine to get it working again.

Re:Unfortunately, I can't reach the control panel. Because Explorer crashes immediately, attempting to open the control panel causes the computer to stop responding completely.

However, thanks for the other suggestion. I will definitely try that later tonight. I appreciate the help!

Re:You can check in ADD/REMOVE Programs to see if has been installed.

If it is not installed, you can try this fix:

Start \ Run
then type regsvr32.exe /i shdoc401.dll

Re:I looked for Comet Cursor, but I couldn't find it. I don't think it was installed with RealPlayer. (The reason why I say "think" is because it's not my computer — it's my parents' — so I don't know for certain.)

Here's the entire message:

"Explorer caused an in module SHDOC401.DLL@017f:500054b2." Then it lists the registers, etc.

Is that any more helpful?

Re:When you installed RealPlayer, did you let it install Comet Cursor?
Comet Cursor is the Program from Hell in Win98SE.

It would be more helpful if you POST the entire Error Message you are getting.
