Q: Hey All
I have a lot of very experienced strange things with my computer over the crossbar for 3-5 days. In particular, I keep this pop-up messages, while I was gaming, DEFRA went online, or even watchng a DVD movie on my system,
so my question is, are they viruses? Heres the funny side and, I had Norton 2003 virus protection (never even had a bad virus before) also had
Spy-Sweeper running. Also ran Norton firewall.
OK, here is where it really weird. After reading / following the recent thread on the viruss MDesigner I had a lot of wanted my Norton 2003 virus program to dump after seeing that much better out there. So I went and bought PC-Cillin-2003 (firewall and virus) software and thats when I started really too many pop-ups and even getting worm? WTH is going on?
Its as PC-cillin-2003, leaving a gate open but thats probably just me thinking that since my computer is now like this . whackd
(My computer was already with POP-UPS before I tried PC-Cillin-2003)
One one thing I would note, and after uninstalling Norton AV and firewall and then install PC-Cillin-2003 Why is so screwed up my computer now? I am pretty good at troubleshooting computer and software problems, but this virus / pop-up stuff has me pretty stumped.
As the right now Im ready for my HDD format because I can not seem to stablelized my system . any advice to get what I shoud try?
Thanks . TP
Best Answer: I was gonna say 5.53 GHZ Dual core??? wow…. but then I see your notes say 2.53
and I repeat, I repeat, I repeat. YES YOU CAN upgrade the graphics card of a laptop! but it's going to be a lot more hassle than it's worth unless you are really tech. savvy. In some cases you cannot though as many of the parts in the laptop are made specifically for that series/model.
If no one answers your questions in 24 hrs I'll attempt to though.
Good luck!
Re:1st Run LSP-Fix (http://cexx.org/lspfix.htm)
[b]2nd Run CWS smartkiller removal tool (http://www.safer-networking.org/files/delcwssk.zip)
3rd Run CWShredder (http://www.softpedia.com/public/scripts/downloadhero/10-17-150/) check for updates and run the sucker
4th Run Spybot search and destroy (http://www.tucows.com/adnload/310138_117317.html)
check for updates then Check for problems and fix problems, then go into immunize and immunize it, block bad pages silently and check the boxes down on the bottom to prevent hijacking
5th Run Adaware (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=506&file=3&evp=8dbaff7daca8f4b55bf695220993fc0f)
update it and scan it and delete by spyware
6th Run Spyware blaster (http://www.webattack.com/dlnow/rdir.dll?id=105693) and keep it from being installed, update first then apply the new ones
7th for even more protection, try spyware guard (http://www.snapfiles.com/download/dlspywareguard.html), it functions much like zonealarm, cept for spybots, with an item in your tray, and will help in realtime spyware protection.
8th Make sure your AntiVirus is up to date and do a full system scan. if you have no antivirus, you need to get AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php), a freeware antivirus that some people say rivals NAV.
9th make sure your firewall is up to date (to test your firewall, go here (http://grc.com) and run shields up!) and if you have no firewall, you need to get zonealarm (http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/1012_zl/zlsSetup_45_538_001.exe)
NOTE: if spyware blaster or guard fails to start, install this (http://download.microsoft.com/download/vb60pro/Redist/sp5/WIN98Me/EN-US/vbrun60sp5.exe) and this (http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/missingfilesetup.exe)
Re:I have also had the pleasure of having this particular WORM
my litte frigg'n WORM (http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=WORM_NACHI.C)
and to top it off I found it after I formatted my HDD with my DSL modem off and then installing PCCillon 2003. How the heLLLL I got it is beyond me.
Re:its been a long night
I now use PC-Cillin 2003 and everything is pretty much back to normal…whew!!!
Re:It's not a virus or spyware, it's the messenger service which has legitimate network use…however, the average user and even more savvy seldom need the service. I disabled it to solve the issue and have since on every XP machine I set up.
Re:Thanks guys, I took your advice and installed 'Spybot-S&D' and it found some more so I deleted them also went into control panel and stopped the program
"MS's Messenger Service" too.
How come my Spy-Sweeper/Ad-Aware6 didn't catch that stuff? by looking at the names of the spware that 'Spybot-S&D' caught I would say that it was the problem.
Anyway, does anyone know how I got any of these since my system has been up and running really sweet since my last WinXP install for about 4 months now without any problems of virus's or spyware and now within one week I get about 5/8 worms and spyware galore!!!
Thanks again guys you've been a lot of great help ![]()
Re:As I said before… If you do not personally use Messenger.. Install XP-AntiSpy and uninstall it. From what you described above, that is the source of your problem..
Re:.guy read this (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973,1528351,00.asp) and this (http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,4149,1528430,00.asp)
Re:Btw can you be more specific on the type of pop-ups you are getting?
Sure, infact one just came up as I returned to my computer, (after being away for just 5mintues) here is what it said:
__________________________________________________ ______________________________________________
Message to Admin user
*********** WARNING: this message confirms your system is VULNERABLE to attacks ***************************
Go to: www.Messagehackshield.com now!!!
__________________________________________________ __________________________________________________
if memory serves me right the very first one that I got was last week sometime and it said basically the same thing as the above one
but it said that it was from Microsoft and it wanted me to go to its associated link, which I did but then it said that it would cost me $19.99
to DL the patch.
Which I thought that was weird????
I can't recall all of the pop-ups which I have been getting but most of them have to do with being "vulnerable to attacks" although there was one for
penis-enlargment
that one did crack me up!!!
Re:Install SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) and if you use IE I would install google toolbar from here (http://toolbar.google.com/) that stops pop up ads.Btw can you be more specific on the type of pop-ups you are getting?
You might want to install SpywareGuard as well (http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html) .
Re:I would still run Spybot-S&D… It usually will pick up on things that others miss.
Do you use Windows Messenger? If not, DL XP-AntiSpy (http://xp-antispy.org/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=26&func=selectcat&cat=1). When you run it, be sure to check the box to totally get rid of Messenger. Even if you use Messenger, XP-AntiSpy is still great to use..
EDIT: What exactly is the subject of these pop-ups?
Re:Hi guy thanks for the help, btw I have Ad-Aware6 too and ran it this morning on all of my HDDs and basically it had found two.
Here's the main reason why I am so puzzled. I keep getting these POP-UP messages in what ever I do and basically nothing is detecting them.
I am at this time running in the background on my system:
1) PC-Cillin-2003 [anti-virus/firewall]
2) Spy-Sweeper [anti-syware]
3) Trojan Hunter [trojan/worm detector]
even when I uninstalled [Nortons 2003 anti-virus/firewall] before installing [PC-Cillin-2003 anti-virus/firewall] I had turned off my DSL modem just so I wouldn't be open for any on-line attacks ![]()
Re:Install Ad-Aware 6 (http://lavasoft.element5.com/support/download/) and Spybot-S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download). Make sure they are updated, run them, and post back what you have found…
