Q: Does not happen every time, but will freeze at startup on the Microsoft Networking login. Never seen anything like it. Is it compatible with PCI and USB network adapter (Linksys).

Re:I doesn't sound like I have the problem as often as you. Maybe once every five boots or so. I've changed the files but don't know yet whether it worked.

Re:Have you done what guy said to do? I just rebooted to try it out since I've only rebooted that one time since I renamed those files. My shutdown was smoother (used to have some things hang on shutdown) and it booted up like a charm. I'd be curious to see if you get the same results. It's been a long time since I got 2 clean boots in a row though.

Re:Yeah, reading your specs I figured not. I just got some more, higher quality memory today hoping it would help it (not the only reason I bought the mem) but now I doubt it will. Thought I was the only one having the problem.

Re:I get the exact same thing. It randomly locks on login. Thought it might be a memory issue as I have a generic stick of pc-100 and a corsair stick.

Re:I'm not sure what details would be relevant. KT7, Duron 600 (not overclocked at the moment), 256MB PC133, SB Live OEM, Linksys Fast Ethernet USB NIC, pair o' Maxtor 20.4GB HDD, Win 98SE, USR Sportster, generic GeForce MX. I am also running WinProxy, but I had the problem before I installed that. I've been a tech for a long time and I have never been this stumped.

Re:When I was having this problem it turned out to be MSBackup. This is the fix if you've installed MSBackup:
Tape detection seems to cause this problem. Removing MSBackup will not solve this problem in itself, and so it is necessary to remove, or preferably rename, the following files.
[C:\windows\inf ]
pnpwfdc.inf
pnpwide.inf
pnpwtape.inf
pnpwppt.inf
[C:\windows\system\iosubsys ]
drvwq117.vxd
drvwppqt.vxd
drvwcdb.vxd
You can rename these files to anything you like (I recommend appending .old to the filename) – you're just stopping Windows from find them. See also "Windows 98 hangs or reboots during startup or at desktop!" below.
