Q: I am putting together a classical p-system with 200MHz 4MB RAM and 32MB VRAM. Because I use this crappy old motherboard (also 430VX chipset), the only way I can get more RAM, I * know * will work to get through the purchase of crucial.com for $ 38.
So, what sort of performance difference would be with 32MB RAM vs. 64MB RAM. Please note that the hard disk is only 4500RPM.
cheers . 977 503 . grep
Re:clock != cas latency
did you mean cas latency when you wrote "CL2"?
2 clock has something to do with control signals…
cheers…
…grep
Re:Count yourself lucky that it supports dimms. If it uses PC66, shouldn't pc100 work on it? I'm sure that any pc100 would run at CL2 when run at 66mhz.
Re:well, the RAM is a bit of a problem. the mobo is *really* old, and only accepts 32MB PC66 *2 clock* DIMMs. Most of the RAM I could get ahold of is 4 clock.
The machine is going to be a "geek toy". Not a server, not really a desktop. The most X stuff I would do would include waimea or blackbox…
cheers…
…grep
Re:Shouldn't be too hard to find some RAM for that mobo.
I have 128 or so megs of RAM that I dont use anymore, I'd give it to you, but Im in Sweden, so S&H would probabaly cost more than the RAM
Anyways, I dont think Im the only one, like BBWF said.
Oh and I think 32 is too little for a workstation, but enough for a homeserver.
Re:why not pick up some ram in the FS/FT forum? i know theres tons of people with old ram laying around that will sell it to you for alot less than crucial.
other than that, n0c pretty much covered it…
edit: why did i say pricewatch instead of crucial?!?!?…..
Re:A lot of it would depend on what you plan on doing with the machine. For small servers this wouldnt be a problem, for desktops it could be a problem if you ran some of the larger WM/DEs.
