After a bit of trouble running SUSE 10.0 . [nvidia graphics] [pci bus]

Q: I tried to 64bit version of SuSE 10.0 installing on my main system since yesterday, but I can not seem to get working.

The setup runs fine, but once the installation is ready and is ready to log on , it just reboots. If I choose the failsafe boot when the boot menu comes back . it just freezes at the probing command.

The first time I ran the setup, I have downloaded all updates, including driver and I thought that this could be the problem, so I blew it all road and re-installed this morning and not d / l or more of the updates . same. Any ideas?

System:

eVga Nf4 + SLI board
3200 s939
2GB A64 (4 x 512MB) PC3500 Maxtor MaxLineIII GT
300GB HyperX
eVga 7800 (3.0 GB / s SATA) Maxtor DiamondMax 10
200GB (first generation SATA) DVD
NEC RW
Lite-On CDRW

Is part of the hardware no Linux compatible? Any help would be greatly appreciated . just going through the installation process itself, SUSE 10 seems pretty slick .

Edit:

One Another thing I noticed which may or may not be the reason for the problem . the cinema screen to the right before the grub menu says that the 300GB Maxtor (the one with Linux on it) is CHS, while DM10 is listed as LBA .

Re:i tried to install suse on my nforce 4 machine, no luck. reboots after the install. I know it doesnt support booting to nvraid.

Re:You can do it from yast, but seeing as you can't get into suse..

You could 1) fdisk /mbr in a dos bootdisk, 2) type fixmbr in Windows Recovery Console from a Windows XP disc, 3) startup the suse disc and instead of a new installation or update install, chose advanced tools or repair tools or whatever and go to the bootloader stuff. There should be something in there about restoring an mbr, or lastly 4) modify the bootloader to boot straight into windows xp and only stay there for a second.

Re:Yeah, there is no option for switching it from anything. It just says what drives are on the 4 SATA channels, and only lets you mess with the PIO and ATA settings for the IDE ports…

I downloaded the 32 bit one last night…maybe I'll give it a try.

One other question…how do I uninstall Linux from my HD so it get's rid of the GRUB menu and loads right to XP?

Thanks…it seems that LBA is not something I can change to easily…

Any other idea? Is it the 64bit version that is the problem? I'd really like to give Linux a try, but I can't get it to run after it's installed….

Did you try changing the access mode from within the BIOS?

I'd also recommend sticking with a 32bit distro as a 64bit won't offer that much performance over it. Plus with flash and most software being in 32bit, it'd probably be more convenient.

I'm actually very surprised you had a problem with SuSE. That's one of the only distros I highly praise because there usually isn't any critical conflicts. It might have something to do with it being 64bit, dunno.

Re:Try setting the maxtor to LBA. I've had problems with hard drives set to other access modes. When booting the suse install cd/dvd try to do a repair install.
