AMD Opteron 144. A poor man FX51? [athlon 64 3000] [amd opteron 144]

Q: Hey,

Someone told me that an clocked to 2.2 on the same performance as an Athlon FX-51 gets. Is that correct? If Opterons are good for gaming? I am about to buy an for $ 211, but I can give the same to an Opteron 144 and get 6 times the performance?!?!

Tell me more about Opterons.

Thanks.

I'd go for an A64 as well.. the other CPUs are just too much money..

Re:I'm not a socket-940 afficianado, but I haven't heard of any of them having a working AGP/PCI lock.

Yes, a 144 at 2.2 should perform just as well as an FX-51.

EDIT: The main reasons I recommended the 3000+ is because of it's halfway unlocked multipliers, it has a little better overclocking flexibility than a completely locked Opteron. Plus the fact that you can definitely get a socket 754 board with a working AGP/PCI lock, and lastly the 3000+ has a stock speed that is 200mhz faster than a 144, for those times when you don't feel like overclocking.

Re:Which skt 940 mobos have pci/agp locks? I think that will be your problem. Regisered ram is no biggie…only $40 more for a gig. 400 more mhz should'nt be a problem. Good luck.

Someone told me that a over clocked to 2.2 gets the same performance as a Athlon FX-51. Is that true?

Actually, if you can get there it's better performance because of higher HTT.

I thought the NewCastle 3000+ were locked to 10x multi's?

Not locked, but you can only lower the clock multiplier.

Re:I thought the NewCastle 3000+ were locked to 10x multi's?

Re:Samgorney, your best option would be to get a 3000+ and a good NF3 250 mobo, good RAM, and overclock it to 2.3-2.4, which is very feasible. You will save ALOT of money over an FX, plus you will get comparable performance.

On the Opteron note, the RAM will be more expensive, of course, and there is the fact that Opteron procs have completely locked multipliers, so getting a 400mhz overclock on a 144 would probably be a bit harder than getting the same overclock on a 3000+, which has the lower multi's unlocked.

Doesn't the FX-51 also require registered memory, just like the Opteron?

BINGO! And both are socket 940

Re:You need registered ram for one thing…that costs more

you wouldnt get 6x the performance, and yes they work as well as their A64 counterparts in gaming.
