Any way to get Windows 2000 to remove with a clean again? [uninstall windows 2000] [c drive]

Q: My computer is crashing a lot lately, by himself and I wanted to remove Windows 2000 and do a clean installation after formatting the , but for some reason does not work the same way as in previous versions of Windows, where you could go to the MSDOS prompt and Just format thing. Anyone suggestions on how to get around this?

Re:1) Put the Win2k installation CD-ROM in the drive
2) Start Setup
3) Choose the partition on which the current Win2k installation is.
4) Select 'yes' if you're being asked whether you're absolutely, 100%, totally certain that you want to format that partition and install Win2k on it.
5) Watch Win2k getting installed
6) Have fun :)

It worked for me numerous times, so I doubt it will fail for you.

Note: If you've the upgrade version of Win2k, you'll have to use the Win2k bootdisks and from there select to install Win2k.

Re:pureglo: if you want to dual-boot 98 & 2000, you would have to install 98 first so 2000 will appear in 98's boot loader. I haven't tried that myself, but we have 98 & nt 4 in a dual-boot on about 30 machines at my job so it should work. This trick won't work with ME & 2000 without a lot of work though.

You shouldn't have to go into DOS mode to create a partition for 2000. Just install 98 first, and then run the 2000 installation off the boot disks or the cd-rom.

Re:Well, it will allow me to delete the partition that I created (I separated my HD into C and E.) It allows me to delete E but not C. Except my windows installation is on C. =/

I was wondering, since Win2k allows for multiple operating systems. What if I installed windows 98 back onto my computer and then used it to get to MSDOS and format the whole from there. Do you guys think that would work?

I believe I've tried the bootdisk thing before and it didn't work very well, at least it wouldn't let me format either.

What a pain in the… =/

Re:why dont you make win2k boot disks? you should have the bootdisk directory one the cd. just double click on the makeboot32.exe file and pop in 4 floppys. then boot with the 4 boot disks and viola! format and install away! or boot from cdrom if you can, much faster :)

Re:pureglo: did you try rebooting directly off the Windows 2000 cd? You could also try once you've got the Win2K setup going, to remove the partition that you want to install the os on, and then re-create it.
Or use Partition Magic boot disks and then try to format the partition from there. But that's given me some problems.

Re:I don't believe I changed it to NTFS because I attempted a second installation the other night and it asked me if I wanted to make the changeover. I tried using a 98 boot disk to format but it recognized another hard drive of mine, the old one, as the C-drive instead of the new one and well, lets just say I wasn't too happy when I got the results of my format.

If you know how to do it within W2K, please let me know! Thanks for the help!

Re:Ehhh, win2k's setup will let you format the drive – why do it the hard way…?

Re:When you installed Win2k did you format with NTFS? Boot to a DOS disk of Win98 start-up disk and format away.
