Q: I have a system with a Pentium MMX 233, 48MB RAM, Stealth 3D 2000 Pro (oldie card especially for 2d 4mb onboard RAM). It is using Win98. I had to pentium100 for just surfing the web and light typing because it was actually slow enough to Starcraft to play (he requirements of the P90.) So after installing a new cpu (p233MMX) I thought I could play Starcraft and Half Life (software mode) on. Certainly the speed of browsing web and typical things, but mainly gaming Half-Life was too choppy, even in the lowest resolution. I thought half the ppl were killed when p120 and things like that name? ok so here is my question (sorry for long explanation) 0.
What will help me increase the performance in games? Do I need more ram? (I currently have 48MB Edo Simm rams, and they are all filled, I might DIMM (add as PC100) memory usage and the current Edo ram or is it the problem of Windows98 with more ram? If yes, i have win95 and win98 can replace.
Edit-i and dim Simms had messed up on this post. hopefully with the help of her regular now.
For PC100 ram is 3.3V or 5.5V? the jumpers for setting the that.
Thanx voltage for the help.
Best Answer: just remember to press CTRL + C to break the command if its taking too long

Re:don't get no more than 64mb ram. most likely your pentium mobo won't cache more than 64mb ram, resulting in a performance decrease if u put more then that in.

Re:I would definately go for a Graphics Upgrade, does the system have an AGP slot.
If it does, that widens the choice, I would go for a 8-16MB card, i.e: Riva 128/TNT or an ATI Xpert 98/2000 card.
Are you sure the motherboard fully supports the P1MMX 233 processor, check the motherboard manuals, if it doesn't it could end up running no faster than the P1 100.
Sounds like you currently have Simms installed (Single In Line Memory Modules), you could always swap out a couple of the smaller memory ones for the more ram (although simms are pricey thesedays).
If you do have a Dimm slot's as well, get a 64-128MB Dimm moudle (3.3v PC66/PC100)

Re:I had much the same system, and half life ran fine for me. I had a riva 128 based video card. You should be in good shape with a new card.

Re:I'd say that your problem is probably steming from the video card. Put a Voodoo3 2000 PCI or even a VooDoo2 in that machine and Half Life should run without a hitch. The Stealth 3D was a pitifully underpowered 3d card even when it was first released, and it just isn't going to give you the performance you need.

Re:Increasing ram will help, but in your situation you would get more results from a much better video card. What you have is expected for halflife, which came out I believe around the p2 -333mhz time? (guessing)
You cant mix simms and dimms. Are you sure your using dimms? How many pins is your memory? 72 or 168?
Keep Win98, try to increase ram and get a better video card.
