Q: I just completed building a great gaming rig. The follow-components are part of the SLI PREMIUM
AMD system.
A8N-3200 + VENICE core
BFG 7800GTX
CORSAIR XPERT 1GB MEMORY
Thermaltake Liquid Cooling.
and a Maxtor 250GB 16MB SATA hard drive max 10 DIAMOND installed windows 3 times 150
I. Every time I get a Windows update or drivers to install and houskeeping I restart when it asks. Then either I have a frozen screen on the Windows XP Pro boot image or usually DISK BOOT FAILURE propose caps. PLEASE INSERT SYSTEM DISK. Now, I have this on the NVIDIA SATA controller.
I also rarely at all received a bluescreen which Exception failure.
My CPU running at 29 degrees C. The memory is right I see it on the XPERT modules.
I am a bit frustrated because last night I was enjoying DOOM 3 and flight sim 2004 on my new rig and it was flying. Ironically, it happened several times last night. I have the power of the PC overnite. This morning I plugged it back in and started up and went to Microsoft Check Disk utility and it worked?
Is hard disk bad? What do you think is wrong?

Best Answer: This has got me. The only suggestion I have is to reinstall the OS. Could you back up the drive and reinstall Windows? First, maybe you could just get a free distro of Linux and boot that and see if it works without you hitting f8 and stuff. If so, you know it is an OS error, and reinstalling Windows would probably fix it. I would have thought it was a BIOS error, but you said you reflashed it. Have you got the latest BIOS/motherboard drivers? Most people don't think of them. I hope that this works, this is just a very strange case, which is why I only have a few suggestions.

Re:I believe I have narrowed it down to forceware drivers. I am installing the nforce drivers immediately after I install XP PRO SP1. I am doing this so I can get the ethernet driver up and running so that I can connect to the internet. What I have done now is install everything on the PC including SP2 and I have not had a problem. I am a little worried installing the NFORCE drivers due to the fact that I am going to get into DISK BOOT FAILURE and hangups again.
Any ideas what the problem might be?

You may also wish to google memtest86+. It is a "modified" memtest86. I understand it was "created" to solve probs the above linked regular memtest had with a 64 systems. As I do not have an a64 system I can't confirm if the "regular memtest has resolved said prob (or if it ever existed

Depending on how you've got your drive hooked up/what sata adapter you are using, this proggie may not work for you.

EDIT: Might check the box your sata HDD came in. I wouldn't be surprised if a disk with these utilities was included.

Re:Sounds like the overclock has corrupted the HD. You can try to run the HDs in a slower mode, like UDMA4 instead of 5. That may be why the 20 gig works, its probably a UDMA 3 or 4 drive.

Re:Ok to follow up it was teh AIS NOS overclocking utility. I put it back on Standard and the computer booted. I do however want to check both my HARD DRIVE and MEMORY. Can you tell me where I can get these utilities.
Ok its booting because I found teh AIS NOS overclocking utility and deactivated. Now it cant boot into windows because there is a bad winlogon.exe. ERROR.
Also it says it cant find the KDBUS.dll?

Re:No actually it was booting properly. Now its even worse. It actually worked for once. Now when I tried the ASUS overclocking utility my computer froze in Windows. Then when I rebooted it wont even turn on my monitor and I can not boot from the CD to reinstall windows. Please help someone.

Re:I'd prolly start with the ram. Run Memtest86+ etc overnight.
Could also d/l and run the Maxtor HDD utility to check the HDD

EDIT: If you've OC'd it, back it down to stock for the OS and mobo/gfx card driver install.
