Q: I notice that on WinXP Professional, I just like my password = empty (return key leave)
WindowXP will boot directly into desktop without asking me where I want UserID on.
With Window2000 log, the standard for a control-alt -DELETE. I can not by-pass and boot directly to desktop?
Best Answer: There are many options. It sounds like you want to set up a site-to-site VPN tunnel, but this can be complicated. Also, if both your offices have Dynamic external IP addresses, it could make things even more challenging.
There is a security consideration, too… when you are connecting 2 servers over the internet, you are at least theoretically exposing those servers to all the unwholesome characters on the internet, so make sure you are paranoid about the security policies and steps taken to protect those machines (and, by implication, the rest of your network).
If you have dynamic IP addresses, register for a few free dynamic dns entries at dyndns.org, or if you're espescially motivated, you can buy your own domain name and have both machines listed under that domain name. You'll have to install the dynamic IP agent on your Win2k3 machines to get that to work.
For a simple, secure VPN tunnel, I recommend building a L2TP (Layer 2 Tunnelling Protocol) over IPSec bi-directional tunnel on your servers using RRAS (Routing and Remote Access Service). If your machines are domain controllers, this could become a bit tricky… strongly recommend against doing this on domain controllers anyway.
Use the following link for the VPN component how-to:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.asp…
Remember to access the other site across the VPN link, you must add a route to the client's and server's routing tables, (if your Win2K3 server is already acting as a gateway, that will be unnecessary).

Re:First of all – set a strong password for the administrator account. If you leave it blank, and you connect to the internet, it won't take long for your system to get hacked. So far several years, and counting. Is that long enough? I haven't been hacked yet, and I have no password for my admin account and am constantly connected to the 'Net via DSL. And that's the one I use all the time. I also follow other security rules though. My point is that this is not that sure fire a way for someone to hack a machine, unless they use no other security.
You could also use TweakUI to autologin.

On Windows 2k:
Once you have set a good password. Log in as administrator. Go to control panel -> Users and passwords. Unselect "Users must enter a username and password". Click OK. You will be asked for the username and password for the automatic logon.
If you must use the admin account for general use, then you can do so here – but ideally you should use a normal user account for general work.

Re:Go into Users and Passwords in control panel, go to advanced tab, and uncheck "Require users to press Control Alt Delete before logging on". Then, go back to Users tab, and uncheck "Users must enter and username and password to use this computer. Click Apply, then exit.

I notice that on WinXP Professional, if I simply leave my PASSWORD = empty (with return key)
WindowXP will boot straight into Desktop without asking me for which UserID I want to log on.
With Window2000, its default to a CONTROL-ALT-DELETE. Can't I by-pass this and boot straight into desktop?
If you are on a network, this is a very very bad idea.
