Q: I turned on Automatic Windows Update on all workstations in my network (all Win2K Pro or XP Pro) but none of them are automatically updated. , I am not sure they even make the attempt.
On way out, theres a proxy server WinProxy 5.0 (which is really crappy software, IMO – Anyone got an alternative) with gates 21 and 80 to open and then a firewall-enabled router to an Cisco 678 ADSL modem.
Anyone have any ideas? Me am able to hit windowsupdate.microsoft.com and workstations to manually update without incident, so Im sort of confused why the auto updates failing.
Thanks.
Re:guy did you check active scripting, if that got disabled you will not be able to reach the WU server…
Re:I was just checking my log files since I use SUS and my server has been down for a while.
Anyway, it looks like the Automatic Update system does NOT log failed attempts if it cannot reach the update server. So it may be attemting, but not actually getting there. If I were you I'd start checking the logs on your proxy server to see if anything is in there.
Re:check this registry setting.
Key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Win dowsUpdate\Auto Update\
Value: AUState
whats it set at?

Re:What about Active Scripting?
Re:I found Knowledge Base Article 241783 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;241783&Product=wupd).
I verified that ports 443 and 80 are open, and that the ActiveX controls in Internet Explorer were exactly as outlined.
However, the Updates are still not occurring, so I've sent an email to Ositis, the manufacturer of the proxy software that we're running to see if there's something else I might be missing.
I'll keep this thread updated, on the outside chance that I'm not the only doofus in the world that might be having this problem.

OK, that shows a successful update on the 22nd of January, which was the last time that I manually updated this box. It doesn't show so much as an attempt to update itself thereafter, even though I have it enabled and set to update every morning.
That leads me to suspect it's actually a software problem, rather than a networking issue. I can post another thread elsewhere, but does anyone have experience with this?
guy – I'm slightly disinclined to think it uses a different port, as the manual Update process works just fine.

Re:My initial reaction is that windows update (the auto version) may use a different port for the checks that it does in the background to determine what updates are available. Try checking the microsoft knowledge database to determine what ports to open to allow the automatic version to run.
