Bay Networks Configuring Network Access Nodes [cisco 1600] [startup config]

Q: Hey everybody,

I have about four Bay Networks (now Nortel Networks) Network Access Nodes (Im guessing they are basically advanced router) but lying around, and I want to see whether I could get it configured / working. Two of his model and two AE1001006 AE1001008. I have / am working with /2500/2600 Series routers, Im not a pro working with them, but can configure. But this I am clueless as where to start the config (reset, like erasing the and create a new config and an administrator password reset, regardless of the user you used to login). Got search on google to try to find any help, but Im not very lucky. Of course, Nortel has to like Cisco and everyone, without locking users accounts (as evidenced buyers) from downloading the operational system.
Anyway, does anyone have any idea where I can start with this? I have looked at the tasks listed under “help” command, but some of the very vauge and does not help.

Thanks boys

Re:I sound stupid but now that I didn't try. I figured it would have to have an IP for Site Manager.

I'll try that and get back.

Re:I just put a bogus ip in there, and didn't use site manager

Re:lol, yea, I thought about contacting them and bringing up something about going to Cisco…=P

Problem with that is these Network Access Nodes were given to me from a school and they don't have the software. If I said the above to Nortel they'd probably want my information =\

hehe….yea. I'm sure they'd hand it over =P

Its worked for me in the past.

"look, I've been a long time customer for many years and our contract expired. I'm trying to help this company out but they're ready to just go buy a cisco router and be done with it. Help me out here, I'm a big fan of your products and push them as much as I can, but if I can't get this going they're dumping this thing."

Class act.

Re:Call them and beg and see if you can get site "mangler"

Re:Yes, I can get into the console with a rollover (null modem cable) and yes, there's a setup script on the flash card and I think it's called installscript.bat or something similar (I'd have to look at the PDF manual again). Each time I run it, I input an IP for the ethernet port and after that it asks for the IP of the PC that has Site Manager running on it. But of course I can't get Site Manager because I don't have a "registered" account with Nortel (they call my account a "guest" account). I need to get Site Manager…=/

Re:Its been a LONG time since I've messed with a Nortel, er Bay Networks, er Welfleet router.

You can hook a console up to it and do anything you need via the command line.

Re:my old bay's allow console, you have to get a null modem serial cable, and then it's not too tough. There is a setup of sorts on the thing….if they weren't a couple states away, I would tell you what it is…think it's a batch file of sortes, check the flash.

Re:Thanks for the quick reply

Well, unfortunately, I don't have one of their "Entitled accounts"
"The software you have attempted to download requires a valid service agreement with Nortel. Our records indicate that you are not currently authorized to download this software.
If you believe your company has a valid service agreement or you are interested in purchasing a service agreement, please contact a Nortel representative:

For Enterprise products, please call 1-800-4-NORTEL and use ERC 290. If you are located outside of North America, a local contact number may be available.
For all other products, please contact your Nortel account representative or call 1-800-4-NORTEL, option 5, 1 for further assistance.
When contacting us, please have your company or site ID available, as well as the name of the product and which software you are interested in downloading. This will help expedite your request.

Entitlement fail reasons:

You are not registered for Electronic Software Delivery (ESD).
You do not have the required contract to access this software"
……geez wth. I seriously hate this. What's the point of keeping Site Manager software and the router's OS from people that could actually use it and learn about it?
Anyway…is there any other (legit) way I can get access to Site Manager?

Re:Configuration of Wellfleet / Bay / Nortel routers is usually done with "Site Manager" – a GUI app that runs on a PC.

This is a case where you (probably) do NOT want the latest version: The version of Site Manager should be the version created for the specific version of the router operating system.

There should be some kind of matrix on the Nortel website to tell you which flavor of Site Manager is appropriate for your Router OS.

Some of the later code does have some CLI capability, otherwise you'd be stuck configuring through the MIB (SNMP strings); things & strings that look like: "set RouterEthernetInterface001Speed = 10" (this is not a real MIB ….. just an example).

Good Luck

Scott
