best amd cpu / mobo combo to get for less than 250 [amd cpu] [couple questions]

Q: Ive been looking around Pricewatch for the best deal on a / mobo combination to get for less than $ 250. I have a few questions too. Firstly 4x AGP video card 8x agp mobo work? Secondly, what is this nForce 2 things Im still listed on the mobos? I have some DDR memory that is PC2700 I want to know is that it is worth going to the pc3500 memory (I want my new system to run Doom3 only thing nice). So far I found Asus A7N8X-X mobo with AMD xp3000 processor 243. When I checking out the claims to have a 400MHz FSB speed, but another asus mobo, I was in control only 333. My question is the fsb 400mzh really worth it?

Best Answer: Abit Boards are superior for the Vista and can run up to the 6000+ processor. I live by my Abit.

pickup a uber overclockable Athlon XP-M 2500+ ( this is the mobile part)
ABIT NFS7 rev 2

now if you need ram as well.
then

ASUS nForce2 Ultra 400 A7N8X-X (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-131-468&depa=1)
XP 2400+ (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-421&depa=1)
CNPS7000A-Cu (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-118-109&depa=1)
2 256 MB Cosrair PC3200 (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-145-025&depa=1)

Its a bit over the budget or not.

Words of wisdom. Re-read guy's post until it sinks in. NF7-S Rev.2 and 2400-M or 2500-M processors will give you the fastest system available (or not even available) today for <$200 with some simple, minor, safe overclocking.

My $77 2400-M is currently running easily at 2.5 GHz (XP 3200 Barton stock speed is 2.18 I think…for 4-5 times the price). And it handily spanks the ever-loving-Christ out of Intel's highest-end stuff – at 7-8 times the price.

As for ram Corsair Value RAM goes for ~ $45 for 256mb (PC 3200) and clocks better then most high end RAM…so there you have it – a brand new, bleeding edge setup for <$300 that will keep you high-end for at least another 1-2 years.

PS – If you plan on overclocking and are unfamiliar you should also probably upgrade your cooling for an additional $30 or so with a better-than-stock heatsink/fan.

Re:If you do not have a video card (or have anything less than a Geforce4MX, such as a GF2 GTS or MX) then the board I have is awesome!
The Shuttle MN31N. It's got the onboard GF4MX video with 2x VGA ports for dual monitors right out of the box. It's also got the nice Soundstorm audio which gives the SB Audigy a run for its money. That and a Barton processor of 2500+ or more, and dual memory sticks (you gotta' have two – the onboard video craves the dual-channel memory performance) and you've got a powerful system on the cheap!

In fact, this whole package should only cost you anout $150 or so. Save that $100 for another new part like hard drive, memory, etc…..

If you DO have a fancy video card, a different nForce2 motherboard with Soundstorm (IPC-T) is right up your alley. :) Don't spend too much…. usually it's not worth the difference between a $75 and $100 motherboard…. unless there's something special on the other board you just can't live without. :)

Re:is thorton different than the barton processor. If i overclock it up to 2.5 how long will it last for?

Re:"First can 4x agp videocard work in 8x agp mobo? …yes. Second what is this nforce 2 stuff i keep seeing listed on the mobos?…the performance of a mobob is mainly based upon the chipset, the nvidia nforce 2 400 ultra(which runs dual channel ram is the best xp chipset. I have some ddr memory right now that is pc2700 what i want to know is that is it worth going up to the pc3500 memory(i want my new system to run doom3 some what nice). …depends=about 6% performance gain.So far i found asus A7N8X-X mobo with amd xp3000 processor for 243. When i was checking this out it said it has a 400mhz fsb speed but another asus mobo i was checking out only had 333. My question is the 400mzh fsb really worth it?…same depends…ddr400 is only worth it if you're going to use fsb of400 or go for fast timings running it as ddr333.I think the asus a7n8x-x uses single channel ram,so is inferior to the ultra 400 mobos;but if you're running single channel ram the xp3000+fsb400 is a much better cpu.

You likely could overclock a mobile xp 2400(cost $77) into a xp 3200 on a cheap abit nf7($78) of the better nf7-s version 2 ,how long it would last is the only question.
