Best program for cleaning Win98SE (can not Re-format) [gateway machine] [hardrive]

Q: I bought a used surplus computer and when I repaired the house and found I had loaded on Win98SE. Because I do not have the original disk win98se I do not want to reformat the .
Is there a program I can use to clean all the old programs registry entries that seem to always hang out without compromise sing win98se?

Also do you know if there is a way for a replacement disk for a win98se OEM (Gateway) to obtain machine?

Best Answer: It is not a folder it is a file.

How did it become corrupted? As a computer person you should know that that is an impossible question to answer. There are many reasons and ways for a file to become corrupted.

Why would you reinstall the OS instead of fixing the problem?

nope, windoctor comes with Norton Utilities, not Norton Antivirus.

guy, a registry wipe? not familiar with it.

guy, that might help some, but I have'nt found any Pr0n on this yet. :)

Re:evidence eliminator (http://www.evidence-eliminator.com/) :D

Re:you can do a registry wipe, it helps a lot when you can format.

Re:Norton Windoctor which comes with Norton Utilities will fix up windows to some extent.

It gets rid of empty shortcuts and and cleans the regsitry somewhat.

But nothing beats a good hard drive format, so borrow a CD or something if you can.

Re:I think you're pretty much out of luck. I doubt Gateway can do anything for you if you're not the original owner with the original paperwork.

There's several registry "cleaners" out there, but none of them are 100% effective or safe. Also, they don't clean out your system folders of old drivers and other junk. If the PC is running fine as is, I'd leave it alone until you can find someone who can loan you a Win9x CD so you can do a proper OS refresh.
