Q: It is my first build and I need a little help. The computer:
ASUS A8N-SLI Premium Athlon 64 3500 977 503 MB
AMD HDD Western Digital WD2500JS (SATA II), some drive
Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP installed SP2
Ive, a dial-up modem card, the nVidia chipset drivers ( except IDE and audio), the modem driver, Realtek AC97 audio driver version 5.10.0.5970 dated 11/22/2005. Everything seems fine, except that I no sound from the line-out jack. AC97 is enabled in BIOS.
Ive “tried the audio driver to support MB disk. It was something different, but still no audio, so I went back to the newer version. I tried to go through the troubleshooting steps in Windows, then everything looks normal.
Any ideas?
Best Answer: Your new onboard sound would be better… the card is too old…

Re:Thanks for the suggestions, but it turned out to be a hardware problem.
I was trying to reuse the speakers from my ~7 year old Gateway computer. They aren't compatible with my new computer. The breakthrough came when I borrowed a set of headphones from my daughter's boyfriend. Bingo! Sound was fine.
In comparing the plug on the headphone with the plug on my old speakers, the speaker plug had one insulator band while the headphone jack had two bands.
A trip to the local big box electronics store later, I have great sound through my new computer speakers.
Hope this helps some other newbie down the road.

Re:Hmmm…Followed the above procedure and still no sound. The AC97 driver is now back to Version 5.10.0.5750, dated 11/17/2004.

No not at all – just disable the BIOS sound, get back into windows, remove the AC97 driver for sound.
Reboot.
Get back into BIOS, re enable sound.
Load the sound drivers off the chipset driver CD.
Should work.
That should work, good luck
