Q: I try a friend of mine up and running on its new Comcast Cable Internet. He has a Motorola Surfboard cable modem (SB5100) and a Netgear router (RP614NA) Working directly with the incoming cable termination site in his basement, I can not a browser to connect. I tried hooking the PC (W2K SP3) directly to the modem and through the router without success. Ive run the installation wizard with the modem and the Netgear setup software. I get a port number, which tells me that the PC is recognized by the router. Ive reset the router to factory settings. The router detects even dynamci IP address. The farthest I got was the return of the modems MAC address.
Forgive my stupidity, but Im stuck. Where to begin?
Any good tutorials on set-up and troubleshooting?

Best Answer: Road Runner is not the best, but if like most of us, you don't have much choice and have to take what you can get. You can call their tech support and they may be able to help you fix it while on the telephone with them. Give it a try.
Re:I use Insight and both times I have hooked up a new cable account, I have had to call the cable company. The first time they had the wrong MAC number off the modem. The second time they could not tell me what was wrong other than it was something on their end …
Always worked after I called though

Re:Make sure that the Cables are all Functional.
Many Internet Cable providers use the MAC number of the computer that was first connected to the Cable system as a form of authentication (Password).
So first connect the computer Directly to the modem and make sure that it is working. If it is not working directly for sure it will not work with the Router.
If the computer alone connected to the modem does not get Internet, check the Network Setting, and call the ISP.
Could be that there is a MAC number confusion.
Once you make it work with single computer connected the system through the Router and Clone the MAC number of the computer?s NIC to the Router.
Since a Router comes with his own MAC number you ISP thinks that someone is Stealing Signal and disconnect. However, all current Cable/DSL Routers provides a menu entry that will allow you to Clone the MAC number of the Registered NIC. Thus the MAC number of the main computer's NIC becomes the MAC number of the Router.
Q: What MAC number I should Use?

Re: Unfortunately I do not have the manual of all Routers that are out there. You will have to read your Router?s manual.

I cannot reach any website. I didn't think to open a command prompt window and try to ping a website or do a tracert.
What I meant with the port number is that when the PC is connect to the router, the router displays a port number (lights up) whereas when the PC is not connected, no port is displayed.

Re:Ahh, I misread your post. What is the IP your getting on the pc, is it a private IP? You shouldn't need to install the software from the cable company. Can you ping www.yahoo.com from a command prompt? I'm not sure what you mean when you say you are getting a port number.
Re:You have the pc plugged into the router, then the router into the modem, right? I just want to make sure, for your description sounds like you have the router coming after the modem.
