Re:The only things I have installed are Divx (http://www.divx.com/divx) (the free one), ffdshow (http://cutka.szm.sk/ffdshow/), and ac3filter (http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/). I have yet to find an avi I can't play. I would be wary of installing any codec packs like Nimo, they're notorious for causing system instability. The three I listed above are stable, and play damn near everything out there.

Hey, WMP 6.4 is one of the best video players out there. It's easy to use, comes standard with Win 2K, and doesn't use up much system resources (compared to other players).
BSPlayer, OTOH, is buggy, somewhat harder to use, and uses up more memory with its skinnable interface.
Now, WMP 7 and higher… those are all horrible. Very inefficient. Slow. Don't confuse 6.4- with 7.0+.

Nimo Codec pack http://www.divx-digest.com/software/nimo_pack.html (be careful with Nimo read th read me before installing it, and do not install the older codecs over the new ones)

Re:You might want to download AVIcodec (http://avicodec.duby.info). It's a little app that lets you drop a video file in and tells you what codecs it uses and, usually, where you can download them.
Generally, I'd think you could play like 90% of the AVIs out there if you got the FFDshow (XviD), Nimo, and DivX codecs. All of those are easy to find, just used Google.
