Q: Hi,
I just hooked a new computer with an active network. The problem I have is that I go under the settings to a new printer to add and can not find the printer. Now, I have not set up the network. advice needed. I have all the drivers installed.

here are a few things you can try
try this- make sure the same user name and password exist on the laptop and on the pc with the printers
try this- make sure the printer dirver is installed on the lap top
try this- right click on the printer from the pc it is attached to-choose properties-then the security tab-click add and find your account on the laptop and give your self permission to use the printer
hopefully one of those will work and those are not in any particular order

Re:For a network printer, its best to assign it a static IP address (unique so that there is no conflict with other pcs on the network) – this has to be done by accessing the printer's menu in the small display and cycling thru various options. Once thats done, the next step is go to each indiv pc that will be using the printer and adding that – Add Printer – Local, uncheck Auto detect -Create a New Port, choose Standard TCP/IP port (in the drop down menu) – Type in the IP address (assigned above) – Finish.
Forgot to mention that while assigning the static IP address do make sure that it is consistent with the IP addressing schema is use, i.e. if all pc are using 192.168.XXX.XXX, the printer must assigned a IP address in that range, only the 4th set of numbers will be different, otherwise the pcs will never connect to it.

Once a printer is plugged into the Network it might obtain an IP and be visible on the Network, but the applications that need to use the printer would not know that there is a Network Printer, and need drivers in order to use it correctly.
You do not add any TCP/IP port; you need the printer's network drivers installed on each computer. Using the Install CD that came with the printer.
The first installation on the first computer would find the printer on the Network and would give you Network configuration options.
There after while installing the drivers on the other computers they would find the printer on the Network.

as an FYI, for networked printers, you select "local" not networked, and then for port you add a new TCP/IP port…
it's a network printer. how do I add the new tcp/ip port. How do I get the the printer name and the port name?

Re:Assuming that set the share permission on the original computer, and you try to add the printer through the Control Panel / Printers / Add a Network Printer.
Sharing can be blocked by Firewalls, and the like.
