Q: Im working with a friend win98 system. He brought it to me loaded with spyware that I managed to completely clean. However, it left Windows is not quite right. Most things worked, except for minor inconsistencies, such as Windows Update does not work. Then I installed Win98 on top of itself and it cleaned up some other minor problems, but in the process Ive lost all Internet connectivity. I see my own network and can ping the house and out on the Internet, but can not surf with IE. I installed IE6 back again with no luck. I have removed and reinstalled TCP / IP and checked everything I know and still no luck. Now when I try to browse my home network I get the message: “Can the network .” message scrolling. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Re:Shouldn't this be kept to one thread?
Re:Further notes: Outlook express is working and Mozilla is working. Did another repair of IE with no luck. Again, suggestions welcome.
Re:Some further work, I just installed Mozilla and it works fine. So it is something to do with IE. I tried doing a repair install and the first attempt made no difference. If this helps anyone come up with a solution please let me know.
Re:Here's a simple and maybe dumb suggestion but go to the Tools>options.connections on IE and see how IE is trying to make a connection (dial, no dial, LAN) etc.
Can you use outlook express or another mail program, is that working?
Re:I haven't had any problems with spyware, it is something related to IE or windows. I just connected with the dialup connection and that makes a connection to his dialup internet provider, but once it makes the connection the data flow into IE stops, similar to what it does through the ethernet port and my cable connection. Thanks for the try though.
Re:Look in the software forums here, and in the spyware thread it explains what to do to re-up your internet connection.
Re:Sounds like the spyware is still getting you. Try googling a winsock repair tool, download it, and run. It will repair your hosts file and might restore your connection.
