can not install xp pro . Help! [boot disks] [hardware problem]

Q: trying to do a clean installation on a new installation. Windows goes through all the preliminary driver loading etc. but once to get to the point where it says something like “Starting Windows” The computer is completely down. I also tried a W2K install and just as the last of the four is the same basically the same stage of the setup process so I suspect a finishes. Here is my system:

Asus P4S533 (updated to 1009 bios)
P4 2.5 (400) 977 503 512 mb Samsung 80GB pc2700
WD SE
Radeon 8500dv 64mb
Toshiba DVD player and burner Acer (do not remember the exact models)
Antec 400 Watt SmartPower (or whatever they were called before the new units came from True Power)

To repeat, everything seems to be gaining momentum is good and I can access the bios without a hitch. Problem occurs at the same point every time I try. Im thinking about switching the ram to see if that makes a difference. If anyone can help I would appreciate it.

thanks

Re:Will it boot using a Win98 boot disk or equivalent?

Re:still looking for help

Re:i'm thinking ram or vid card….removed the burner but i don't see how i can minimize hardware any further…..maybe disable onboard sound and lan

Re:can only suggest you try installing with the minimum of hardware & use an older videocard.
