Can rip a DVD / CD-damage it? [dvd rom drive] [insted]

Q: I have a small collection of DVDs and Ive set up a home theater based on my computer. of those annoying DVD-ROM drive, I sat thinking about ripping DVDs to all hard drive.

Is possible damaging them in the process?

Best Answer: Cleaning the disc with any of the methods talked about should be fine. The shirt is most likely of those methods to scratch the disc, but just make sure there aren't any sharp things on the shirt. Also, the actual information is not stored on the disc part that is always trying to be protected. If a disc is scratched, it can be repaired to pretty much as good as new. The actual data is stored on the side that has the logo of it's manufacturer, its a small, thin metal sheet that is used.

Static electricity will not effect a disc.

Yea man, just look at the name. Its called ripping your dvds for a reason. Your drive just rips them to bits.

Ripping, shredding, burning – wow, what sheer, utter destruction! No wonder the RIAA/MPAA wants to stop it. They're just a bunch of hippy peaceniks at heart, you know. :) Make Love, Not CD/DVD Copies…

That's pretty dang cool.
Is that using a laser from a DVD burner?

Re:It will only damage it as much as putting it in a DVD player will while watching it :)

Re:no, but it will give your CPU a workout. ;)

Re:Thanks for the replies guys. I plan to shrink them as well. I have been doing a lot of reading about how to do it with DVD shrink and DVD encripter or something like that. I'll probibly be on here again asking a few questions :) .

Re:Lol… no, it's fine. But DVDs commonly take up 5gb, often more… you mean you want to shrink them as well?

Re:Ok, now that I'm done being a smartass, no, it won't damage them.
