Q: I have a computer here I am troubleshooting. I can ping other computers on the network, but I can not ping outside example. www.yahoo.com.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the network card and I get this other IP, which is not part of the network. I manually assign an IP on the network but still can not see the outside world. Hell, I even used a different network card and still the same problem.
Ive been through ipconfig and tried to refresh and still leaves the same problems.
Any help would be appreciated
Best Answer: This has been an issue with Windows server for quite some time. What is happening is when your computer boots it doesn't wait long enough for the login scripts to process.
There is a group policy that will fix this.
user configuration | administrative templates | system scripts | run logon scripts synchronously
This tell "the system to wait for logon scripts to finish running before it starts the Windows Explorer interface program and creates the desktop……..ensures the the logon script processing is complete before the user starts working"
Though the above is the important one, you may want to use it in conjunction with:
Computer configuration | Administrative templates | System | Logon | always wait for the network at computer start-up and logon

Re:Ok, I turned off the firewall and still can't connect to internet. I can see all the machines on the network and can even share files between them.
I did notice that the owner installed their ISP software on this machine because I can see a netzero animated logo where the IE anmated logo goes in Internet Explorer. I wonder if I have to uninstall it.
ARRRG! I don't understand why this isn't working!!!

I've had that stupid WinXP firewall cause problems when behind a gateway device. I don't know if disabling it will help, but you might give that a shot.
WinXP firewall is disabled but Mcafee is in it's place. I'll try turning it off.

So when you do ipconfig /all everything looks ok?? Default gateway, net mask, and DNS all assigned? Make sure no firewall, proxy, or any manual assigned options are present since you're supposed to get everything from the router.
I'll have to take a look at that again but I'm pretty sure they are set right.

Re:Ok, I tried pinging my primary and secondary DNS last night and was able to get a reply.
I should mention I'm sharing my DSL connection through my router which is DHCP enabled.
There has to be something wrong with the xp machine because I can connect another machine (windows2000pro) I was working on and get the outside world.

Re:It does sound like a gateway problem, but a concern that I have is that you mentioned getting an IP that is not on the network, which could be an indication that you are not getting a DHCP lease. That could be the root of the problem. DHCP should be setting your gateway and DNS options so if it's not working properly, you could have those problems.

Re:If you can ping other hosts on the network but not the Internet, you have a problem w/ the default gateway. If you can ping the default gateway and an Internet site w/ its IP address but not its domain name, you have a problem w/ DNS.
