CDrom will not boot. Can not a bootable CD to boot. [norton ghost] [mobo award]

Q: System: Abit mobo SE6, SW version Award BIOS boot order set 7/00.
Bios: Floppy, CDRom, HDD1
Then tried the following order: CD, CD, disk CD.
No go.
Bootable the Abit start up CD and a bootable CD from an image of W2k.
I expect the Norton CD at least boot to DOS, as what NG6.5 calls for the creation of whan Bootable CD.
Any suggestions? 977 503

Re:GOT IT!!!

Thanks to all your suggestions.

I went back and used a Linux install CD that I knew was bootable.
Looked at the files and found they had nothing special except their calling up of certain boot files, which I did have on my "created" W2k+SP1 cd as well as W2K OEM CD.

The solution was in my bios settings.
I had not set the cd to autodetect in the 2nd Master Bios setting.

When I used the boot settings set to only CDROM in bios–CD for all three boot options, I noticed that the CD light was not coming on when it prompted me to insert a bootable disc.
Also in the start up listing of devices, the hdd was listed, but not the CDRom.—therefore it was not being accessed for booting.
Once I double checked Bios for 2nd Master and set it to Auto detect,
all my "bootable" cd's booted the system.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
God bless

Re:Tom,

You do not say if you are using an IDE or SCSI CDROM. I had a Fireport40 adapter I could not get to boot from CD when the same CD would work with an IDE drive. Of course I had the correct ASPI drivers on the Cd and enabled CD boot support in the Fireport ulilities.

Re:I had a hard time figuring out how to boot from my SCSI CDROM drives because they would take so long to recognize that a disc was in the drive.

I haven't had the same problems booting from EIDE CDROM drives, though.

Re:BlueT,
I do have a RH Linux package with cd's that I have not yet used. Good suggestion. I have Rh 7.0 and ManD 7.1.

I can boot from floppy, I just burned a cd from NGhost with "bootable" files, thinking it would boot up.
I seem to have trouble interpreting these softw manuals. I was thinking that I would be able to boot up with the CD as stated in the NGhost 6.5 manual if I used a "Boot CDRom" disk and followed the instructions when prompted in burning a Partition Image.
Either that is misinterpreted or my CD is not booting anything, as the floppy used to make the cd was in fact used to boot to dos. That is why I started suspecting that my CD or bios is not really booting up anything from cd or the NG method is not correct or I misinterpreted the meaning of boot up.

In a few hours, I will try the Linux CD.

Re:My guess is that the bootable CD would need some special files and formatting, much like a hard drive does. For example, a hard drive needs particular code in the boot sector, and (for older MS-DOS-based OS'es, for example) might need certain other files. Like MS-DOS-based OS'es needed IO.SYS and MSDOS.SYS on the hard drive. I think some Linux install CD's (like Red Hat) are bootable. You might try those. Is there a particular reason why you aren't booting off a floppy disk? Did you burn the "bootable" CD yourself, or does it come with claims that it's bootable?

You might look at this FAQ:

Re:LittlePrince,
I normally have the setting ; floppy/CD/Hdd
Since I thought I had a bootable in the CD, and it would not boot, I reset the bios to CD/CD/CD and nothing booted up. Had to reboot and change the bios back. Floppy boots normal. I did change a setting to allow the hdd more time before starting up: I believe it was a delay setting. Changed it to 9 sec. CD light came on briefly but then went off, pause was there for 9 sec, then hdd booted up.
I need be certain I am using a bootable CD. Will try an original W98 if i can find it somewhere around here. I don't use it anymore since i cloned my W98 install.
Please try to remember what your floppy solution was.

Thanks Semperfi, I have Bart's Way info but never was successful in making my W2k CD bootable.

Re:exactly what happened when u set the boot sequence to cd cd cd??
i had a problem doing floppy floppy floppy a couple months ago. it woudln't boot the floppy.. i can't remember how i fixed it… but if ur having the same problem as i did, i'll try real hard to think….

sorry, my brain is mush right now. too much stupid midterms34

Re:No! there is some special things you have to do to make a bootable cd. You can find here in the forums do a search. I just read a few of them recently.
Here (http:// http://{$MySite}/messageview.cfm?catid=34&threadid=332948&highlight _key=y&keyword1=bootable%20cd) is one.

Re:No, not a dumb question, because I don't even know if I have a bootable CD at this point.
I am going to bring some (what I think should be bootable) cd's to work and see if that machine boots up.
Do you know what type of file would be on a cd in order for it to boot up? I would think that an "autoexec.bat" or any xxx.bat should boot or try to run. What about an autoexec.ini?
Or command.com?
What files should be on the CD in order for it to autostart at boot up?

My boot floppy has drivers for the cdrw drive ( disk) as well as Emerg.Boot for W98. Can I burn these on a CD and expect it to act just as the floppy does when booting up?

Re:Probably a dumb question, but have you tried a bootable floppy with a CD driver, to make sure the CD drive is installed correctly? Have you been able to boot from these CDs on another machine?
