Changing Motherboards Ask! [mobo] [cdrom]

Question: Hi, I think 977,503 on buying a new motherboard that will accept everything on my current motherboard – can anyone tell me if I switch mobos if I reinstall my OS, and everything? OR after switching to new parts and running regardless that might come with the new – should run without problems? Michael

Best Answer: Unfortunately the answer to both of your questions is the same 'sometimes, but not always'. I had a dell that no other board besides a dell board would fit in, but MOST OEM cases will fit a normal aftermarket ATX board.

Also; you do not always have to format the hard drive, but most of the time you do. I would expect it, and back up your data on an external, or DVD's.

Re:THANKS everyone for input – will be a little while, BUT do believe I'll give it a TRY, after backing up, as advised. Anyway, when and if I end up doing it I will report back here to share the results.

Re:In the Win98 registry there is a section in the registry under Current_Hardware called Enum. If you delete all entries under that heading, you can get a successful swap. Be sure to back up your registry files before doing the swap – in case it doesn't work, you can go home again… I don't know for sure if that method will work under XP.

Re:Give it a shot. It has a pretty good chance of working. At least backup your system state and make a repair disk though. Your registry is getting ready to be butchered pretty badly.

You'll know based on stability how the move went.

Re:I just read the other day in the OS forum I think, somebody went from intel chipset to via without reinstall. Supposedly went very smoothly. It could have been in the motherboard forum also.

Re:I am running W' XP SP1 Home Edition on an MSI NForce – would be upgrading to one of the new NForce2 Mobos – BUT – I do NOT want to have to re-install and update ALL of the things I have accumulated over the past year.

Re:What chipset are you moving from and to? What operating system are you using?

Depending on your answers it CAN be done. I would never recommend it though. Do a clean install.
