Q: I received a message from comcast.net to change from a static IP using DHCP. Ive followed their instructions http://www.comcast.net/connectioncenter/staticip.asp and rebooted, but I could not lease an IP address from DHCP. I went to a command prompt and ran “ipconfig / renew” and got the following error message: DHCP server not available “. Do I need a default gateway or something up? How does my computer know what address to use to contact the DHCP server?
I am in Baltimore, Maryland. Anyone else on Comcast moves to DHCP and can help?
Re:Check all bindings, etc., and make sure nothing is checked that shouldn't be, of course. (BTW, what operating system are you using?) Up here in central New Jersey we all switched at the end of December – DHCP, no problems.
Perhaps these are transient problems as new users come online? I haven't had any poblems this past weekend though sometimes the mail servers are painfully slow. Maybe give it a day or so before calling the Comcast transition number. Since you're not networking, they should be able to help.
Re:I think that Comcast is having problems with their DHCP servers….
least that is what it seems like this past weekend.
Re:Have you tried switching back to the old static IP info? If that works, then just keep using it until it stops working and then try the DHCP. I imagine it must be impossible for Comcast to co-ordinate getting the messages out to all their customers and getting the system switched. Ideally they would have both systems working at the same time and switch off the old one by a certain date.
Re:I am connected using just my PC so a router is not an issue.
Re:<< switch to roadrunner >>
… somehow I don't think that is an option.
I know there is a lot of info on the comcast switchover at the dslreports.com forums, I haven't gotten my switchover info pack yet myself. Are you using a router or anything or are you directly connecting that 1 pc?
