Best Answer: The blue screen of death is typically caused by either driver issues, or overheating.

To check for overheating, run your computer in an air conditioned room, or with with a fan blowing right on the case, and see if the issue persists. A broken fan, malfunctioning hardware, or a clogged exhaust vent can all lead to overheating.

To check for driver issues, see if there were any recent Windows Updates on your computer, and try to roll them back, and see if the issue persists.

Also, it's not a bad idea to open the computer case, clean out dust, and make sure all wire connections are nice and tight.

By the way, I'm one of those "people on the internet who don't believe in Norton." It's been my experience that Norton is incapable of stopping the most common computer viruses on the web, and by itself makes a computer slower and less stable (much like the viruses and malware it supposedly protects you from.) While I don't think Norton is related to the Blue Screen of Death, I would recommend replacing it anyway, with a free antivirus like Avast, or a professional antivirus like Eset Nod32.

Re:Updated to Service Pack 1.

Also reseated and reapplied cooling paste to processor/heatsink.

Problem still persists. I don't believe it's the DVD player, because I tested some Divx files and it locks up part-way through, and it very seldomly (yet has) locks up in Winamp. Will test and see if problem is motherboard or video card, however, any other suggestions or probable causes for this problem?

Re:DO YOUR WINDOWS UPDATE PEOPLE!!! I've read like 2 or 3 threads on here that can simply be fixed just by udating windows thru window's auto update feature. Try that. If that doesn't fix it check ur DVD drive… look for updated drivers or try a different dvd player software

Re:Running winXP which comes with at least DirectX 8.0, if I remember correctly. The DVD drive is sharing the same IDE channel as the 16x burner. Is that a possible cause of the lockup?

Re:Do you have the DVD setup on its own IDE channel?

You didn't mention and OS, but make sure you have the latest DirectX installed.

Re:Did more testing on it.

I downloaded Prime95 and ran it all night, with cpu temps riding around 36 C, and it didn't lock up at all. It only seems to freeze upon running movies or dvds (really dislikes the Lord of the Rings DVD :( ), and the BIOS reports the cpu temp as 45 C (after it freezes and I reboot). Is this temp a bit hot? I used stock cooling on it when I put it together (2 years ago). Heatsink came with a heat-pad, which is the only thing I used.

Thanks in advance.
