Q: My friends computer goes to a black screen where the cusor revolves around an hourglass and you can move across the screen, but he does nothing but will bring back, he always has to restart.
Any ideas?

Re:heheh "if nothing else works…" Well, sounds like you didn't try anything else. Reformatting is a last resort for me. Obviously, it will normally *fix* the problem, but, of course, you lose everything in the process.
In some regards, reformatting equates to a "Pyrrhic Victory". (see http://www.bartleby.com/59/4/pyrrhicvicto.html for definition).
It's the throw the baby out with the bathwater approach…
And worse, you never really learn the cause of the problem, which could easily reoccur if the same circumstances present themselves.
But, you're up and running and seemingly in good spirits. So, happy computing.
