“[Computer] is not accessible” error [d link di 604] [di 604 router]

Q: I have two computers connected to D-Link DI-604 router (with switch). Both through the router connection to the internet fine. Neither have a software firewall. The computers on the same workgroup and can see each other in “View workgroup computers” and see each other names.

When I try to connect a computer to computer 2, it says 977 503 977 503 Computer2 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer.

When I try to connect to Comp 2 Comp 1, it is says

Computer2 not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Access is Denied

Can someone please tell me what could be wrong? I am willing to try setting up the network from scratch, if necessary, I do not know how the Windows settings return to default.

But i think it's just a set of predefined security settings that you can apply to a system.

I'd go through the network settings (client for microsoft networking?) settings and make sure the pair are pretty close to matching. But other than that I don't have a lot of insight on Microsoft networking. :P

Heh, unfortunately there is exactly one option that is selectable in the Client for Microsoft Networks properties, and I don't even know what it does.

Yes, one computer is using the Administrator account, which exists on all WinXP Pro systems.

Also check Start > Run > GPEDIT.MSC > Local Computer Policy\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\User Rights Assignment\Access this computer from the Network

You should have either Everyone & Administrators or if you are in a Windows domain Authenticated Users (if you want a little more security) or at least this user account if you want to be really specific. Make sure that the shares you are trying to access lists read access for your user.

What happens if you try to go to the same share on one of these computers from that computer ie \\localhost\c$ and also can you access these computers from ANY computer on the network using the same USERNAME\PASSWORD combination?

Have you run any of the security templates on these computers?

Hmm, thanks for your suggestions. I just found that if I specify which location I want to go to in an explorer window, ie "\\computer1\shared", I can access it. However after trying everything in your reply I am still not able to go to my workgroup computers, and double click the other computer to have it list all the shares available.

By the way, what's a security template?
