Q: I have one year old system continuously boots by itself after a few hours of shut-down. I initially thought the motherboard had gone bad, so I bought another. Same results. I think of the power supply is the culprit. Any ideas?
Thanks
Re:A couple of suggestions… to be administered with LARGE grain of salt…
1. Check your other PCI devices in BIOS settings. Some motherboards can be set to let any PCI device such as modems, SCSI cards or USB add-on cards bring it out of hypersleep. I even had a sound card once that would wake the computer up if you spoke into the microphone…)
2. Check the switch wires for a short.
3. (This one will be a pain) Check under the mainboard for unused mounts or screws which might be contacting the underside of the motherboard.
4. The BIOS setting may simply not be working right. Try disonnecting the network cable and see if it still happens.
If none of that makes any difference, I'm inclined the suspect the PSU as well. Hope this or something else helps.

Just gotta check, this is a ATX and not old AT board right?
yes, you are correct
Re:Just gotta check, this is a ATX and not old AT board right?
Re:still not it. power supply and power switch are suspects now.
Re:Some motherboards have an option to turn on or off after a power failure. If it is on and the power surges just enough, the computer will kick on by itself.
Re:Yes, i have cleared the CMOS several times on both motherboards. I will try a new power button switch. I thought about it in the past, but I just assume something that simple can't possibly go bad so soon.
Re:I would suspect the POWER BUTTON/SWITCH before the PSU.
Try disconnecting it to rule it out.
Did you try Clearing the CMOS?

If the system has a WAKE-on-LAN feature, turn it off (in the BIOS).
that was the first thing I did, and negative, that is not the problem.
i wish it was that easy, damn computer
wouldn't be much of problem if it were mine, but it is my sister's and she is on my case every day.

Re:yeah, i think i need to look for one
Re:Sounds like a heat issue. Try putting a known-good power supply in and see what happens.
