Q: I have Compaq Presario 5650 and it will not boot. It happened last night, when I tried turning on my computer and was connected to a Belkin surge protector is fine and my monitor was also connected to the same surge protector. What can I do to correct the problem? I tried to switch the power cord from the monitor with my desktop, but no luck.
Re:by won't power up i mean nothing is happening no boot. I also tried switching to 230 and back to 115 but of no use.

Re:the problem wasnt really that power was lost. the restoration of power includes surges and brownouts, both of which can destroy your power supply. a surge protector can protect from surges. however, the brownouts will cause problems since it's a sequence of on\off\on\off. a UPS (universal power supply) can fix this. this is the thing with the battery rated in VA (not watts btw)
Re:I Will do that today when i get home.
Thanks

does your power supply have a voltage switch in the back (i.e one way is 115V, the other is 230V)? if so, with the computer off switch it to 230V then back to 115V. sometimes this "resets" the power supply if it locks up.

Re:Call Belkin,
If the whole PC is even fried, they will be willing to pay for it.. Most likely it is your PSU…
Great company.

The problem arises when the power is turned back on, it SURGES insanely… When the whole grid is off then turned back on there is a giant surge (not as big as a lightning stirke). That probably fried your supply.
They were telling everyone on the news to UNPLUG EVERYTHING before the power was turned back on… Only the people that needed that message didn't have power to receive it!
surge protector?
Re:dang… that sucks… Just go out and get another power supply or something.
Re:Theres a big difference between turning your pc off properly and having the power surge and cut off.

Re:What do you mean when you say PCs werent meant to just have power cut off like that. My computer was off when power went out and i always shut down when not working. Sometimes my Dell Dimension 4550 freezes and i unplug it and plug it back on, it is the same thing isn't it? Do you know which power supply will be needed to fix it, are there different types?

Power supply is dead, same thing happened to me on the last blackout. PCs werent meant to just have power cut off like that. Pray that its only the power supply.
