CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 9 (cheap) – Can I do better for $ 35? [bitstream font navigator] [vector illustration]

Q: CorelDRAW Graphics Suite includes 9:

CorelDRAW 9 – and page layout

Corel PHOTO-PAINT 9 – image editing and painting

Canto Cumulus 4.0 –

3.0 977 503 9775 03Microsoft Visual Basic for scripting technology

Corel TEXTURE

CorelTRACE

Corel CAPTURE

Corel SCRIPT

All for $ 35. (OEM / legal / no manual)

I know version 10 is out. But what do you think of this package? Can I do better with a different graphic suite? (For cheap?)

Re:this is too expensive (http://www.micrografx.com/igrafx/designer/) but i've toyed with the previous versions of it. Doesn't seem to bad of a product. Too bad the price isn't competitive.

Re:Hey guy, What scanner are you using for along with your corel stuff? Also what digitial camera are using? I was at a Graphics show here in boston 2 months ago where they were using Dual Macs and Adobe products, Corel and other Software giants were there but the whole show seem to revolve around Adobe as "the must have solution". I was looking around the Corel booth and notice Bryce3d and a couple of other products they offer. What 3D kits are using for animation, such as Truespace 4 or Infini3D etc, etc.

Re:Did I leave out a link to purchase? (http://www.9software.com/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=9&cat=Professional_Grap hics)

I am on a tight budget. I am trying to stay under $200 (which looks very likely at this point).

Ok, I want to really learn more (and put into practice) web publishing and especially graphics. I figure MS FP2000 (which I own along with my limited HTML knowledge), CorelDraw 9 (an awesome illustrator for only $35) and perhaps Uleads PhotoImpact 6.0 (I can also get it for $35, which seems to have a better animation package) will provide a total solution. Perhaps JASC Paintshop Pro 7.0 ($99 everywhere) could fill in for Adobe Photoshop if Corel's Photo Paint falls short.

Am I on the right track with this oddball collection of (inexpensive) programs?

Re:is this package sold in stores or online order only?

Re:<<

That IS what I am also worried about. What is the learning curve like?

Thanks for your help! >>

depends on how far you want to go, you get a hold of using the interface and doing basic illustrations within a couple of weeks or less, but you can really go into depth and do some complicated stuff, like actions, scripts etc… sorta of like photoshop, you can do amazing things without even using 20% of all it has to offer.

Re:yes GIMP can be compared to Photoshop/Paintshop/PhotoPaint

and you are right, you get a total solution with the coreldraw package. corel photopaint may not be the best bitmapped editor out there, but its still very capable.

Re:appopin, i am using coreldraw 9.0 as of now, v10 have some neat features, but trust me, there more than enough power in coreldraw 9.0 to overwhelm you.

Re:guy, what version of Draw are you using? Is 9 pretty close to ver. 10?

I see that GIMP is a bit like Corel PHOTO-PAINT 9 – Image editing and painting – included in the Graphics Suite.

As I understand it, Draw is a "complete" solution.

EDIT: What is the learning curve like?

Re:Sorry, I didn't know the difference. I was just answering the question as to what GIMP is.

Re:guys, GIMP is a bitmapped editor, ala Adobe Phtotshop, CorelDraw is a program, totally different things. thats like comparing apples to oranges.

Re:I now have this bookmarked. I see there is GIMP for Win.

Thanks, I'll check it out. Free is (usually) good.

EDIT:
<<Warnings
The Windows version is GIMP 1.2. The base GIMP code should be relatively bug-free. The Windows code without doubt has bugs, though.

The GIMP for Windows is not really targetted at end-users yet. The program(s) might crash unexpectedly or behave otherwise strangely. (But of course, so do many commercial programs on Windows.) The stability seems to depend a lot on the machine, display drivers, other software installed, and whatnot. Presumably the more memory you have, the better GIMP works. (For any real image work, I would say 128 megabytes is minimum.) Many people do find GIMP very useful. But it is not a Photoshop killer (for real Photoshop users, that is), Photoshop has lots of features that the GIMP lacks.>>

Re:you cant go wrong with corel draw, i been using corel draw for my illustration work since verion 5.0, i worked briefly with Adobe Illustrator and tried MacroMedia FreeHand, and personally i think CorelDraw is still the leader in the vector imaging field as it always been. and at the price, you really cant beat it.

Re:GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/)

It appears they now have both Windows and Linux versions.

Re:Gimp is only $0 and very capable.

Re:Thanks.

It seems to have everything I am looking for (perhaps without all the animation capabilities of Ver.10 – upgrade to 10 is only $199 – a big savings if I ever need to).

Anyone else? yea or nay – I will order tomorrow, if yes.

Re:While, I'm not a huge Corel Draw(suite) fan, thats a great value for a very capable package. IMHO, you couldn't legally beat that package for value and there is a good amount of resources available on the net.

Re:I was looking at the samething too today and was thinking to myself, just play and learn with it and then move up to draw10 later when i feel ready. To me i don't see why we can't go wrong with it. Seems to be mature for ameture needs.
