Crash Windows XP on the system now restore will not load [mouse pointer] [4 corners]

Q: I want to restore my computer using xp system restore locked up and closed. Now when I try to start the computer I get a black screen after the Windows XP Pro logo and a working mouse and when I try to boot in Safe Mode I get the same effect with mode in all . An opinion on this matter would be appreciated.

Best Answer: Try running a check disk from safe mode. Here's where I've just given step by step instructions for that:

Re:Does the keyboard work, period? Can you get into the BIOS, for example.

Otherwise some full specs might help us out here. Include the (yes!) brand and model of your power supply and your RAM, as well as the rest.

Re:Ok, i was able to boot from the windows cd but when i got to the Recovery Console it told me that none of the commands were valid. I tried to repair the windows installation but got nowhere with that. Finally I tried just reinstalling windows but it wouldn't let me get past the EULA nomatter how many times i pressed F8 to agree to the license.

Anymore ideas?

Re:You can try two things:

Boot up with the windows CD and choose the "R" option that first appears for repair.
This will take you to the "Recovery Console". You will have to log on with your adminstrator password once the Recovery Console loads. (It will first ask you which installation of windows you want to enter. If you only have one and it only shows one, type the number "1" at the prompt and hit enter.)

Now, when you are in the recovery console at the prompt, you can type:

chkdsk /r

After that is done, do this:

Type:

copy boot.ini pagefile.sys

the, type:

del pagefile.sys

Then, type:

exit

and it will restart into windows (remove the CD first)

If still no good, boot with the CD, keep going to the installation of windows section,
and choose "Repair Installation" . You will have to reinstall all service packs, etc. after the repair install.

Re:Is it a usb keyboard?
Can you try a ps2 kb?

Or, it might be something in the BIOS, see if the kb can get you into that

Re:try booting with standard video drivers (it's one of the choices when you press F8 during the XP boot – I can't recall the exact wording) If that gets you in, reinstall your video drivers.
