i remember there was this one type but i forgot the name, it basically records everything you do on the computer and it could be set without anyone knowing it is recording. the software is also free but expires after a while..
Also, when a site says free trial..is it truly free without any hidden fees? also do downloads bring any viruses?
i want to catch a certain someone doing a certain thing…

Camtasia Studio is a program that does this. You might get a trial but then you have to buy it.
There’s an open source version (free) called Cam Studio. http://camstudio.org
I don’t know if you could just leave them running all the time. They fill up a lot of space in a hurry.
