Creative 52x CD-ROM is good? *** Now I'm doubting between Sony and Mitsumi CD-Rom. Any suggestions? [creative cd rom] [mitsumi]

Q: Hi, I am thinking to buy but Im not certain whether this is a good or not. Which is better, Creative or Memorex because Im on the Hot Deals forum, there is a good deal on Memorex 48x. Thanks

Darno
nb: I do not want a DVD-Rom . Im just looking for CD-ROM, you can not tell me to switch to DVD-Rom.

Re:Well everything other than the 72x is at least a year old. The 72x problems were posted right after it came out (on the anandtech board too!).

ahh the anandtech archvies. :)

anyways, i dont know if the claim is valid, but this is just what i have read on the baord.

Re:I read that the problems with Kenwood were mostly in the past now. they had some bad parts in them. how old are those bad experiences? what about the new ones?

this is good info for me, becuase I'm building a comp with a CDROM (DVD if the price goes, down, I know DVDROM's much better then CDROM's).

Re:I had a 24x CDRom and it was extremely good.
Fast/Reliable/Quiet. The only problem with it was that it's digital audio extraction sucked horribly.

Asus makes a nice CDRom, I had a 40x put in a friends computer and it works very well.

Re:For the past 10 years I have bought nothing but creative cd, dvd, and cdrw drives and have had no problems with them whatsoever. Maybe it's just me, but I highly recommend them!

Re:To sy a word about kenwood. I had a 62X drive for 5 months and it worked perfectly. Incredibly fast, unbelievably quiet and never had problems reading anything. I just sold it on the message board and the buyer is having no problems as well. I recommend the Kenwood drives.

Re:I have always had good luck with Toshiba CD-ROM drives. I also like . Stay away from any off-brand CD-ROM.. they are more trouble than they are worth.

Re:I've had to replace all 3 of the Creative 52X's I've put into systems. I stick with the Asus or Teac drives now.

Re:Kenwoods have died very quickly, had problems reading some CDR's, slightly scratched CD's, etc… search the forum… one guy had a 72x die after 1 hour of constant DAE, ONE HOUR… happened twice (after he got the replacement).

The kenwood trueX 40x also had MANY problems listed above. They seemd to die after 3-6 months.

The kenwood 52x seems to be the one w/ the least reported problems, but i would stay away from kenwood.

What you read from sharky and everyone else is the first impression of the drive only. They test it for what, a few days? And those who get the drive for free, might not report any failures a few months down the road…. (well thats just speculation on my part). But users have reported repeated failures (even with the replacement ones sent to them).

Search deeply in forums (i got this off the old MaximumPC forums like last year).

Re:Definitely look in to the models from ASUS.

Re:Why not have a look at the ASUS 40x, or the new 45x? It's much quieter than the "jet engine" of the 50x….nearly just as fast andvery reliable.

Re:<< Yea right, Kenwood is good. You might wanna read a little bit more about them before you say that. >>

Yeah I did in fact read about them. Sharkyextreme did an article on their 52x drive: http://sharkyextreme.com/hardware/kenwood_52x/

Heres the findings:

Well put a dress on me and call me Sally, the Kenwood 52x actually delivers on its impressive performance claims. In fact, in Ziff-Davis' CD-WinBench99 test, the 52x actually outperformed Kenwood's own performance estimate concerning the inner track transfer rate of the drive, beating the original figure by 200kbps.

Even in the real world arena, where most lofty assertions of new technology fall flat, the Kenwood 52x delivered, rising to a level that clearly surpassed the speedy ASUS CD-S500 unit.

The Kenwood 52x also achieves the intended effect of lowering its overt decibel level substantially versus comparative 50x drives. It's one of the quietest drives we've ever used, virtually silent during constant operation.

You can disagree w/me but don't say I don't 'read up' on things before I post.

Re:creative 52x = a jet engine ready for take off.

Re:Actually I have Pioneer DVD 16x already. I want to buy CD Rom cause I want to separate when I use DVD and CD disc. Now I am debating whether Sony or Mirsumi. I've heard is also a good company so anybody knows if is good or not? Which one do you prefer or Sony? Thanks for all the answers…

Re:Well, i have gone thru like 4 Creative 48x drives and can vouch that they are a POS. However, when i had an exchange for the last faulty 48x, i got a 52x. So far, ive only used it a few times… But its loud and noisy… the spinup/spindown is long too. :(

Creative IS SUCK!

Re:The creative labs 36x CDRom is bar none the worst CDRom I've ever used.
The 48x is a decently close second.

Oddly, I'm fairly happy with my 52x. The drive reads any sort of 74 or 80 minutes CDRs no matter how cheap and crappy brand disc. And it reads CDRWs quite well. It also does DAE reasonably well.

Keep in mind that Creative labs does not make their own CDRoms, they liscense other people to do it for them, so a different speed of CDRom from creative (perhaps even different models in the same speed) may not be the same manufacturer. I believe the 52x is a new manufacturer.

Are you absolutely sure you don't want a DVD drive? Because my Pioneer 104s 10x DVD is also a 40x CDRom and is probably the nicest CDrom I've ever used. If you use an SPDIF plug you can get over 30x for digital audio extraction, it's not that much more than a good CDRom and DVD is becoming pretty standard now, you can get many software titles on DVD.

But you say you don't want DVD, so I'll assume you don't. I wouldn't buy a damn thing from memorex and while my creative 52x is good, there's no telling if yours would be exactly the same.
Myself, I'd probably look for a drive from Sony, they make high quality stuff and at least you know that Sony made it, note someone else and they relabeled it "Sony". Perhaps Teac or Toshiba.

I've never tried one, but I'd be tempted to try a Pioneer just-CDRom , I'm really impressed with the CD capabilities of my 104S.

Re:I recommend against buying a Creative Labs 52x. I bought two of them for my professors' computers before reading about them on Anandtech. They're loud, seem slower than a lot of 32x CD-ROMs I've used, and I've had really bad luck burning CD->CD using these. For some reason my 32x CD-ROMs can burn 8x CD->CD but using a 52x I can only get 4x.

Stay away from them. :)

Re:I have bought several Aopen (Acer OEM) 52X CD-ROMs (about $43ea) and they have been very fast and reliable. I have had nothing but trouble from Creative Labs. BTC used to be OK (if you could stand the noise and vibration), but I had problems from them recently.

Good luck.

Re:Been using my creative 48x for about a year now. No probs

Re:The Creative 48X's were pretty bad, though the 52X's are pretty reliable. I have the 52X (two of them actually) and they work pretty well. However, it is noisier than other CD-ROM drives and it tends to spin down and spin back up too often.

Re:guy's right about the Kenwoods. They're like Fiat lemons. "They have the makings of a high performance machine, but are too cheap." Some people have had them break down in a matter of days. I personally couldn't recommend a Plextor, though. I may sound crazy, but I had a fiasco about a year back with the UltraPlex 32, and they would break down quicker than you could say Plextor. One of them wouldn't read any discs but audio. My Creative 48X has been working good for about 4 months. An examination of the drive reveals it is manufactured by BTC, so I may be one of the lucky people.

Re:Yea right, Kenwood is good. You might wanna read a little bit more about them before you say that.

Re:Kenwood is good as well. BTW: anything higher than 40x is overkill.

Re:Stay away from Memorex and Creative (and BTC) for that matter.

I've had great experiences with the Sony 48x and Toshiba 48x CD-
ROM drives.

Re:ok thanks for the inputs…

Re:I wouldn't recommend either, I have heard many problems on any of Creatives drives. Although, I do not know who I would recommend, it may be worth taking a look at Teac.

Re:Eh… try to stay away from them, Memorex as well. I heard that they suck. For CD-ROMs, I like Pioneer, Acer, Plextor and TEAC.
