Q: Im thinking about building a PVR with MythTV box. I have yet to capture cards, and I was wondering how much easier it would have to wait until I, as opposed to adding large quantities of hardware on the first build. Ive never used Debian, my only experience being with FreeBSD servers (hardware is pretty static).
Best Answer: well… i found out that windows 7 is going to be like a "mini-me" vista. and yes there is a free upgrade when you buy vista home premue or higher, but like all new systems the first few months to a year has all alot of bugs and errors… it happened with vista, XP, and Me.

But realize that a package from unstable may pull in dependencies from unstable, if that dependency is libc you'll end up updating mostly everything anyway.
Hm, sure enough, my libc is from unstable. However -
% apt-show-versions | grep testing | wc -l
645
% apt-show-versions | grep unstable | wc -l
110

Re:You don't have to "go unstable" just to use some unstable packages. Put testing and unstable sources in your sources.list, put APT::Default-Release "testing"; in /etc/apt/apt.conf, and when you need something from unstable, apt-get install -t unstable foo.

Re:ext2 and 3 are fine with large files stability wise, but XFS is faster. XFS is the filesystem designed by SGI for Irix where handling of large media files is the norm.

Re:XFS > xt2/xt3?? I noticed talk of some instability of xt2 with large files.
Edit: I am downloading the netinstall ISO found Here. (http://www.physik.tu-cottbus.de/~george/debian-xfs/)
Thanks for the help everyone, I will be installing Samba 3.0 on this one. Maybe I should go unstable, since 3.0 is brand new, LOL!

Re:Dont dualboot a PVR, just install Samba so you can share the files. Then use the XFS netinstall disk and make all the filesystems XFS.

Re:If you are dualbooting with 2K or XP, you can use NTFS filesystem. But the downside to NTFS is that Debian (or any linux) can only read the data, not write to it.
EDIT: Just remembered that if you look around (on google) you can find some program that will let you read (and I think write) EXT2/EXT3 (which are linux partitions) in Windows. This might be something to look into…

Re:yes, that would be a deal-killer for sure. MPEG2 can use 2Gb per hour, so many thanks for saving me some time there. Any suggestions for a filesystem then?

Re:The maximum file size for FAT32 is 4GB, IIRC – that may be limiting on a video box.
Re:Great, thanks. I am also going with a two drive scheme, a boot drive with the OS on its default filesystem, and a 120 gig drive for the files themselves. I was considering using FAT32 for the data, since this machine is at least a dual boot. Any potential problems with that?
Re:Shouldn't make much of a difference – Debian doesn't do much in terms of hardware detection and setup anyway. One way or another, you should just need to add a line to /etc/modules to load the driver at boot time and then answer debconf's questions. So I'd go ahead and install the basic system and whatever programs you want that aren't related to the video hardware. Wait until after the hardware is installed to add the TV programs so that the devices are recognized by debconf.
