Disabling automatic driver install WinXP [auto driver] [drivers windows]

Q: At this time, Windows startup, when a device without drivers, Windows automatically installs a driver without asking me. It has always been that way since I installed XP. How do you turn this off? How do you make it so that I asked for drivers?

Im with WinXP Pro.

Re:Just so you know to install the ATI dirvers I had to go into the inf folder and delete them out of there. Then after that they installed fine.

Re:Haven't tried this, but:

My BIOS has a setting for PNP OS installed? If you change this to No, perhaps XP won't auto install.

I'll have to give this a try when I update my crummy ATI drivers – they give you an .exe to update the drivers with explicit instructions to remove previous drivers first; trouble is, after you uninstall, windows reboots and reinstalls drivers. Then the .exe fails to update. ATI should use VWs marketing slogan: "Drivers wanted".

Or you could try booting to safe mode an updating driver?

Let me know if this works.

Re:From time to time, WinXP will not recognize a piece of hardware it already knows about correctly. It will then proceed to look for a new driver, and having found one in its data base automatically install it. This would explain it finding new hardware when none exists.

As far as changing this built in PnP characteristic of WinXP, I know of no switch that will turn it off.

Re:If WinXP is not 100% sure what driver to use for what, it will (of course)…prompt you:)

But if it is sure, it will install whatever corresponds to the hardware device in the 'inf' folder.

If you are concerned with XP using an older driver, or you have updated drivers downloaded or on CD, then just update the device.

I know what you are asking, and I honestly don't know what to turn off so it always asks….but that's my 0.02:)

P.S. For me, sometimes it asks, sometimes it does not!

If you remove the device from the system panel, and refresh, it will tell you it has found new hardware……then you can supply the new drivers. Don't reboot after removing the device though. Only reboot after you install the new drivers for the device you removed that XP subsequently found. Understand:confused:

Re:He didn't add anything, but I uninstalled his drivers and when I restarted his comp without installing new ones it prompted him. However, if I do that with mine, it won't prompt me. It would just install the default drivers automatically.

Re:The only way I have unistalled drivers from windows xp is by going to the properties of the card or device in questions and uninstalling from there.

Did your friend use any third party software to modify it?

I looked in tweak UI and didn't find anything

What did he add that promted him? I have added a modem and a sound card that XP did not have the drivers for so it prompted me.

Re:Hmm, how do I go about doing this?

And it SHOULD be possible, because my friend has WinXP, but his doesn't install automatically. It prompts him.

Thanks for the reply.^^
