Q: I have Windows 2000 SP3, all NTFS partitions (10,10,15,15 GB) 0.
I 7.00.22 Speed Disk (Norton SystemWorks 2003) 0.
I wanted to know what the best defrag software out there for 2k / NTFS . Ive heard a lot of good things about Diskeeper, but was not sure they all Wer true.
So . what? Of course, I want the best performace I can get. Time is no big deal, but Windows Defrag takes sooooo long to get it done and Speed Disk does it in just 20 minutes or so.

Re:I think O&O Free Defrag does a better job of organizing the data closer to the out sectors of the HDD (which increases disk speed because the read heads don't have to jump all across the HDD), I could be wrong. This is the one I prefer though.

This is true. Microsoft bases the built in defragment on Diskeeper. But I will fourth the vote for Diskeeper 7. I use it, and think that it is great. For the retail version (not sure about the freeware) you can do a boot time defragment. This allows you to defragment the MFT, pagefile, and system files, as well as defrag the normal files. I definitely recommend it, and can tell you from experience, that it is far superior than Norton Speed Disk.

Re:I agree with iGiveup. DiskKeeper 7 is an outstanding and fast defrag program for XP Pro and XP Home. Works great for me where NSW 2002 kind of screws up. Works with both FAT32 and NTFS.

Re:Diskkeeper is much faster than the built in defragmenter (much better than 98's, and better than 2000 or XP's but not by as much) and you can pick up the freeware version on the Executive Software (http://www.executivesoftware.com/coverpage.asp) homepage. Have to register for it, but its fast, shows you graphically in detail what your disk looks like and did I mention its fast? If you pay money for the full version ($29.95 for the home version, which only differs from the pro version in that it won't do network defragmenting, which you probably don't need) you get the ability to defragment your page files, as well as optimize your boot sector. Other features too but thats about it.
As you can probably tell, I am sold on it. Plus, its freeware!!!

Re:I use a freeware command line tool call contig (I think that's the name of the program. I know it's the name of the executable). It works well for me and is supposed to produce results superior to that of the built in defrager. I'll post a link if I can find one.
