Do I need any peripherals or otras cosas disconnect before formatting HD [taking the plunge] [loveletter]

Q: Bout to format and delete all (Victim of Love Letter (A) virus: frown:: frown:. Are there things I need to know to dive?

Re:Well, Deleting a partition I think is good enough. A LLF is usually when you need to get rid of bad sectors, etc.

Re:Not to contradict, but won't a low level format be best after a virus hit of sorts??? I have always wrote zeroes to the drive after a hit for that extra piece of mind. So far, so good…

Re:Thanks again Urbantechie. Here goes!

Re:<< .I have a Maxtor 20 gig, just a few months old, would you use their MaxBlast plus floppy for formatting or anything else first or should I just use the windows 98 boot disk? >>

No. That disk is just for testing the HDD and Low Level Formatting it.

<< 2.Can I "clean boot" by using the: "Boot to DOS" prompt from the start-up menu in windows? >>

Just hold down shift while booting with the floppy disk.

<< 3.Also, is this what I type when I'm in the dos screen? (Re:\>FDISK) >>

Yes. Type that in. Press 3 (i am 99.999% sure) or its labled Delete Partitions. Press 1. Delete the partition.

<< 4.Lastly, are two partitions better than one and what size should each be? Thanks. >>

Depends. Some like to split it up for a certain partition for games/swap/apps/OS etc. I like it one big whole.

Once you deleted the partition, go back to the main menu, choose 1, then 1. Now its going to ask you if you want to use the maximum size availible. If you choose YES then the partition will be 20gigs. If you choose NO, later it will ask how big you want each one or in percent.

After that, restart your comp and boot back into the prompt. Type (without quotes) "format c: /s"

Re:Thanks Urbantechie, A few more Q's if you don't mind:

1.I have a Maxtor 20 gig, just a few months old, would you use their MaxBlast plus floppy for formatting or anything else first or should I just use the windows 98 boot disk?

2.Can I "clean boot" by using the: "Boot to DOS" prompt from the start-up menu in windows?

3.Also, is this what I type when I'm in the dos screen? (Re:\>FDISK)

4.Lastly, are two partitions better than one and what size should each be? Thanks.

Re:Just backup what you need. It would be better if you would FDISK your drive then format.
