Q: At the moment my dad has a cracked copy (it was me and I had no money for XP at the moment), but I want him a legal copy. I think getting him the XP Pro upgrade offered through the University at a discount, but he needed something other than a legally Windows 98 CD or something?
Thanks for reading,

And you can get OEM XP Pro for $140 and it'll be legit for sure. Or $85 for OEM XP Home, and it'll be legit for sure too. If legit is the goal, those are some easy ways to get there.
Agreed.

He needs a legit CD and license for the previous OS (Win98 or whatever) or else you're still not really legit. For the previous license to be legit, it would need to be something like Win98 retail. Why not get him an OEM WinXP Pro CD & license instead of the Upgrade one? An upgrade that you buy as a student may not be legit for anyone else but you anyway.
I can get upgrade pro from WISC for $80…..

Re:98 should do the trick, IIRC it is just a CD check. Although I think it may have copied some stuff over from my NT5 CD when I installed it.
