Q: Im just wondering if years from now there will another Doom. I get the feeling that this will be the last one, everyone knows for sure?
Re:Don't worry the game will run on the common GF2/3/4 or Radeon 8/9X00. Heck I've ran the alpha on a GF2GTS and a GF4 Ti4600 and a G4Go 420 and all handled it pretty well. since it was only an alpha which is yet to be optimised this will run alot faster so I predict a GF2 would be bare minium very low detail and a GF3 will make it playable.
Re:Doom had a storyline? While you could tell you were on Mars in Doom1 given the maps of the UAC bases, etc., what was there in Doom2 that gave you any indication you were on Earth? (besides the little text messages that were supposed to move the "story" along)
I recall Doom being the main reason I had for upgrading…I can't believe I played the whole game in low-res in a tiny window about 3"x 2". I hope they finish developing the game soon, before the minimum requirements are a GF6 or Radeon 15000 vid card…

But the Half-Life extensions were telling the same story from a different persons perspective.
Shh, you're giving away the plot dude.
Besides, that isn't the reason why the expansions were popular. They were popular because 1) they were further story to the "Half-Life Universe" as it were — not that it was occuring at the same time — and 2) they were good. Oh, and because they were the closest thing anybody had to a sequel. I seriously hope there's a Doom 3 expansion; First Person Shooters are always so short.
Re:well in that sense I agree with you, and can look at my comment as a two-sided agruement.
I also however think that D3 has been not only in development for so long, but also PUBLICLY SPOKEN OF for a long time. Im sure some people are saying screw it itll never come out, im sick of waiting, and stop following its development.
A larger group of developers also makes for more diversified ideas on the project, but it also creates quite a bit of chaos im sure.
Im not neccessarily saying im impatient and want the game now whatever form its in, crappy or not. i do want it the best it can be made. id just prefer know nothing about it and die wetting my pants waiting. its like being told your christmas present is 'bigger than a breadbox'.. or 'something you said you wanted once'…
well WHAT THE HELL IS IT?
yea. im done.
take that for what its worth

exactly. sure, i'd like games to be done & ready to play NOW, but seriously, just throwing more people/resources at a project isn't the solution (I wish a lot of companies would realize this). so, i'll put up with the wait, for the sake of the 'good thing'…

I dont think that they`d turn a game that could stand on its own into an expansion pack, do you?
If they'd get crap for spending time on a separate game they would. And knowing ID they might put out the expansion pack to appease the masses and setup the scenario for the sequel while they spend the next few years working on it. I say it'd be a sound investment. C'mon, look at the Half-Life expansions.

Re:doom3 sells well = doom4 in 2 more years…
doom3 doesnt sell, then no more doom…
Re:Originally posted by: guy
No, I don't think so.
I believe that all id products are just demos for the engines they want to sell. Doom, Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3, all have not only been games on their own, but have been engines in many other games.
As long as there are companies to buy the engines, id will make games, some of which are bound to be in the Doom series.
Well said.

Long as the Doom line is popular, and most importantly profitable….you can bank on it they'll keep churning them out.

Re:even if carmack was to quit writing programs. someone would still make a doom4

From what we`ve seen on Doom3, its all on mars, not earth, which is where Doom2 is set. I can see ID getting critisised if they make another doom game, baced on a retelling of doom2.
Expansion pack it is!

I`d like to see a remake of Doom2.
Doom3 is a retelling of Doom1, which was baced on mars, Doom2 however was supposed to be earth. I think that`d be good.
Assuming Doom 3 isn't huge enough to cover that part of the Doom timeline then I guarantee it's going to either be an expansion or a sequel… oooo, maybe both. ![]()

Re:Duke Nukem is another good example of one that's carried on throughout the years… though he's kinda been stuck in limbo for a while.
Yeah, game developers will always be willing to go back to a franchise if it's popular enough. And frankly I think Doom is gonna stay popular for… well indefinitely. I mean a lone Space Marine, charged with defending the universe, versus the venemous pit spawn of Hell is the quintessential exemplification of what we look for in First Person Shooters: Good versus Evil. Think about it; almost every successful FPS in the past has been along those lines. There are of course some exceptions, but most of those are usually along the lines of Pretty Damn Evil versus Not Particularly Evil By Comparison.
So yeah, reserve your copy of Doom IX today!
Re:Yes.
Because I say so.
j/k. There's no reason why they can't be working on Doom XXVIII 60 years from now. Look at other icons like Sherlock Holmes, Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, Conan the Barbarian, etc. etc. all of which have survived over 50 years, some over a century.
Re:Seriously, how are we supposed to know?
Re:Even the guys at id don't know what game they might make in 10 years.
