DOS programs eating 100% of the CPU? [dos programs] [dos window]

Q: Someone else could this happen? A few programs to be implemented in an MS- to eat up 100% of my CPU, although they function normally otherwise (besides running quite slow). I have a P3 700MHz, which should be more than sufficient for the program, so it must be something else. It ran better on my P-200. : P

Edit: If I reboot into DOS, it runs fine. But that kind of defeats the purpose of the program.
I also have plenty of memory.

Re:I am probably wrong but if you want to run a DOS application you should have installed DOS. Windows dosen't really have DOS anymore it is just a DOS emulator, in other words it just gives your computer enough DOS so it dosen't freak out.

Re:perhaps the are doing their own timing with tight loops. Then, there's really nothing you can do about it unless you can reset the priority of the DOS box to share cpu better.

But, you'd still be at 100%, but the app would give it up when someone else needed it.

Re:Definitely not too much disk thrashing. The program allows me to allocate as much RAM as I want. I've tried everything from 8-64mb (which is more than it needs), and still no luck.

The video mode is probably not it either, since it essentially just shows text.

Specifically, this is Quake.exe (from the game Quake). GL runs just fine, but if I try to run the old .exe or qwsv.exe (the server), it just floods the CPU for some reason.

Thanks for the reply!

Re:All I can suggest is to right click on the DOS application shortcut … batch file… pif file … whatever .. and play around with the environment settings it provides..

What do you think it is taking up so much CPU? Too much disk access (thrashing) as a result of too little memory being allocated to the application? Problem with differing video modes?

What kind of DOS applications are these? Intense graphics, sound… require a lot of memory? networked? etc… Is it all , even the very simple ones?
