Q: Not sure what I was doing wrong. I have a 5Mbps down cable connection through Charter (Atlanta, GA). There are two computers on a router set up, and neither can be more than 40k when downloading websites. The cup will be high, then start slowly settle to a constant around 40k. Has anyone seen this before, dealing with something like this? Thanks
Best Answer: Time Warner along with every cable company that sells internet have ways to check on modems…I know this I work for a cable company installing. What kind of modem do you have ……if you can get on the internet then it is not the modem which is sounds like you are on the internet because you said everything you download(which implies you are on the internet) is corrupted. Most people hate to admit that there could ever be a problem with there computer because it worked just fine the other day. Here is my advice if you can get on the internet then delete everything that could have been potentially unwanted material. Delete temp internet files cookies and restore factory settings on everything that gets you on the internet. If you cant get on the internet then go to Start Run type in CMD press enter on the CMD.exe and type in ipconfig/all if it pulls up a valid ip address then you know you are getting on the internet….valid ip addresses without a router are 68.XXX.XX.XX OR 78.XXX.XXX.XX Something like that with a router it will be 198.XXX.XX.XX if you modem or NIC card is bad then it could be 169.XXX.XX.XX.

Re:This is one reason why I am pleased with my ISP. When I called to sign up, I asked about speeds, and instead of some generic "could get" thing, they said, the speeds (I get 300K down, 150K up Real download speeds). It's an SDSL system for the apartments I live in, and they dial up channel by channel if speeds start slowing down. The really hammer P2P users.

Just bebcause they say they are 5mb doesnt mean you are actually going to hit it. Sounds like your isp has oversold their bandwidth
I thought that too, but even if they sold the same 1Mbps of bandwidth to everyone in the state, it doesn't explain why I always get EXACTLY 40K.
