Q: I have Verizon DSL for six months. I have no problems until the new year started.
the past two weeks had, I had intermittent loss of about one min.
i would ping yahoo, and will not reply.
then I get ping times of 3000 following the ping would ms.
then The following are ms
then 2000 1000 ms
etc
till would ping ping times are back to normal 100 ms.
i had my laptop connected to same DSL router, and it also had the same result, so its not computer dependant.
verizon has gone online tests, checked my connection to the collaboration, etc. and found no problems.
then They asked me how long my phone cord that connects to the DSL modem. I said 25. she said just over 14 can the problems I have. but when I asked why it was working fine for the past six months, she had no real answer.
i dont want to move my computer / computer desk / monitor, etc on the other side of the room to be closer to the jack would 0.
a long telephone line is caused by my intermittent problems?!
THX!
Re:You can get one at this site:
Whole House DSL Splitters (http://www.homephonewiring.com/splitters.html)
Or possibly a local Verizon tech may give you one at no cost … I was having trouble
with my dsl as well and a tech came out to check wires at the Pedestal .. I asked him
about the dsl splitter & he just gave me one (no charge) .. then I installed it

Do yourself a favor and buy a whole house dsl splitter … it installs
where the telco line comes in .. then run a dedicated cable either cat 5
or shielded quad wire from the dsl splitter to your dsl modem
It will work a whole lot better … dsl lines do not like more than 4 or 5
dsl filters on them … it will degrade your signal
where do i buy a whole house dsl splitter?

Re:I've also seen some nasty corrosion form right at the RJ11 plug.

The phone cables running from your Telco box outside the house probably run in a loop around the perimeter of your entire house. They might be 100 yards long. If the jack you are using is at the end of the loop, you have a 300 foot telephone extension cable, for all practical purposes.
The usual problem with Telco connections is at the connectors, rather than the length of the cabling itself.
Check the error log in your DSL modem and see what kind of errors you are having.
how do i check dsl log?
That depends on the modem.
I'd borrow or buy (they're only a few dollars) another phone cord, and see if replacing it helps. Is there *anything at all* that has changed recently? Did you add any fluorescent lights lately? Moved/added any electrical appliances? Added anything else to the phone line (another phone, another DSL filter, swapped a cord, added/changed a security system, etc)? I've sene all of the above cause problems at random times, much like what you're describing.

Re:14' vs 25' should not affect it at all. Did you put the DSL filter on?
