Q: I have a home network between two computers with a Linksys BEFSR41 router that has split a DSL connection. My computer works perfectly in my room and the DSL connection will last as long as my computer is still powered (usually one week or so with Win2K). The problem lies with the computer of my family.
After approximately 15-20 minutes to work perfectly, the DSL connection dies and the computer will apparently not have access to the Internet until the computer restarts. I have not much thought about the problem yet, but I really do not know where to start. I think once I get home from work I will use the router switch ports connected to our computers are about and maybe then I can see if the problem is related to that. The family is the computer running Win2K
Does anyone have any ideas? I would greatly appreciate any help you could provide.
Thank for your time,

Re:Thank you for all your help everyone,
I believe the problem is fixed, no need to restart since Saturday.
The problem, I believe, lied in a couple of ports that I had left open when I was trying to get Age of Empires II to work with a friend who was playing over 56K. As soon as I closed them all the problems went away. The unresolved problems with AoE II is a whole 'nother thread.
Dolph, maybe this info will help in your situation.

Re:my problem is very similar. my computer is fine, but my roommates can't get online. i've tried enabling dns, reinstalling tcp/ip, reinstalling ie, and it will still only work for a few minutes before it stops being connected (can't even ping). furthermore, i can only stay online as long as i want because i assigned my ip to the dmz. it's a linksys 4 port cable/dsl router, and i have earthlink dsl. any thoughts?

Re:Open up a command prompt on your Win2K machine that is having the problem. You can do this from Start–>Run—> Type "cmd"
This should open up a command line window. Type "ipconfig /all" and make note of your DNS servers and Gateway addresses.
Now follow the instructions I gave before by typing "ping <ip address>". You'll either get replies or some type of no response message. These messages will help diagnose the problem.

Re:Okay, since your other computer still has access to the internet when the family one goes down we know it's not the DSL connection. The question now is whether the family PC has ANY network connectivity when the problem arises. To test this try these steps:
1. Ping one of your ISP assigned nameservers or other device on the internet which you know responds. Does it respond?
2. Ping your other machine.
3. Ping 127.0.0.1
Which ones give you a response if any?

Re:Can you ping ip addresses when your DSL connection dies? How about website addresses. Try pinging the local ip address of the router when the connection dies. that would be the ip u set for your gateway. if you get nothing from that, then your computer is having problems talking to the router itself which is most likely whats happening. does it die every 15-20 mins exactly?

Re:There is few ways to approach it, what I would do is the following.
If it loosing total Network connection then you have to start from hardware i.e., try an other NIC card.
If the family computer can still network with your computer, but only looses Internet then the hardware is probably fine.
Check all the setting of Internet Explorer, and network.
Try to refresh I.E, you can install it again it will maintain the same configuration. Try to reinstall network driver, and configuration.

Re:Jack – The computer in my room is fine all the time, performs perfectly. The family's computer is the one that needs to be constantly rebooted after about 20 minutes of use.
