Q: Ok, I have no one to talk about this pseudo- in a while, so I thought I would issue up

Edit: Sorry, I thought I was in the software when I posted this!

I am wondering if this story will end something like this (http://www.gamespot.com/features/btg-daikatana/).

Is it just me, or does Romero kinda look like Travolta in Battlefield Earth on the photos in that story?

Re:yeah, I'd really love this (as well as Valve's TF2 vaporware) to be released, at least in time for my future grandchildren to show it to their blind arthritic carpal-tunnel-syndromed grandfather (referring to how I picture myself about 40 years from now, after spending half a century sitting in front of computers ;) )

Ok, I haven't seen anyone talk about this pseudo- in a while, so I thought I would bring the topic up
for fun. Anyone seen or heard anything new about it? Obviously you don't read /. (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/01/02/2211205&mode=thread&tid=133) too often. They had a Top 10 Vapourware of 2002 link (http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,57023,00.html) up on Friday and this (http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,57023-3,00.html) was on it.

IMHO it probably won't be out this year because they won't want to compete with Doom3.

Re:Ah the old Duke Nukem Fornever.. I stop thinking about that a long time ago. The thing has been in the works for years now.. it's probably built on the Quake2 engine :o ) All I have to say is that if it does ever come out, it better be damn good or there are going to be a helluva a lot of angry people.

Re:What they're doing with this is a joke. The only reason why it's still of interest is because there's still a strong following for the original DOS . They should have simply stuck with the Quake2 engine, finished the , and then proceed onto Duke5. We would all be waiting on the release of Duke6 at this point. I have a feeling this is going to be another Daikantana fiasco.

Re:I hear it will be bundled with that killer new Bitboyz video card ;)

Re:They are on their third engine, and going on their 6th year of development. From my understanding most that work at 3DRealms(programmers/animators) get paid well below the industry standard.

Re:Unreal1 took 4 years for just the engine and then another year and a half for its story and gameplay. Descent 3 took 4 years and so did that POS Daikatana. Then again how long did it take for Ultima 9? even then it wasn't 'done when its done'

I rest my case.

PS I reckon they have moved to UT2K3 engine (fourth time migrate I reckon) and they did it quietly as they knew everyone's reaction.

Re:3DRealms recently updated some info on DNF, but no date was given. I believe that Max Payne was very late as well, so I wouldn't(haven't) give up on DNF just yet.

I don't think it's vapor-ware, look how long it's taking for the latest Doom to be released :(

Yea doom3's development didnt start till early 2000.. And he spent alot of time supporting the development of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and doing the Q3 expansion pack Team Arena.

Re:1. : 3D Realms' first-person shooter is the first title to win the No. 1 spot in the Vaporware Awards two years in a row. The is so hazy it received almost as many votes as all the other vaporware nominations put together. First announced in 1997, the has now been five years in the making. So long, in fact, 3D Realms makes jokes about it on its website. It's routinely referred to as "Duke Nukem Whenever" or "Duke Nukem If Ever."

"I remember that they announced this when I was in the eighth grade!" wrote Ian Huggins. "I'm bloody in college now. What is this?"

"This was on the cover of PC Gamer back in 1998," recalled reader Jonathan Roberts. "Of course, it is now 2003. Five years later and still no . Their website still says it will be released 'when it's done.'"

Dennis Murphy wrote, "Once again, is the definitive vaporware. Hell, even Warcraft III made it out this year. You know, I think I'm going to set up a script to submit every year."

The company's president, George Broussard, gracefully received the award on behalf of 3D Realms.

"What can I say?" he wrote in an e-mail. "We're undeniably late and we know it. We've switched engines a couple of times, and we've started over a couple of times. We've made some mistakes, and we've learned from them. I'm just glad we're in a position to do those things, and to be able to make the we want to make, instead of being rushed out the door to meet stock projections.

"In the end all that matters is the quality of the ," he continued. "So, lessons have been learned, and progress is being made, and we're working as quickly and quietly as we can. You're completely justified in calling us 'turtleware,' at the very least, but the release date is still 'when it's done.'"

Re:I remember seeing the video, last year? or was it the year before? Well, I remember being convinced by people that it would come out in 6 months. 6 months went by, plus another 6 months….

I've given up hope on the coming. Looked good at the time but unless they change the engine again ;) I won't be buying it…. if it ever does come out that is….

Except Carmack didnt start working on Doom3 until AFTER the Quake3 was completed and didnt do any kind of release dates until recently. 3dRealms announced Duke Nukem in 1997 and slated it for a late 1998 release.
