E6600 w / retail fan-supplied thermal paste or Arctic Silver? [arctic silver 5] [retail fan]

Q: I probably know the answer, but I get my setup: GA-965P-

Gigabyte S3
E6600 retail
Patriot 2×1Gb RAM (4-4-4-12)

I not really planning on overclocking too much, but I people are able to hear some decent results with the included fan retail level. I think I have some extra lie- should I use with an Intel fan? Me not really want to spend another 40 U.S. dollars on a better fan / heat sync if I do not have to.

Best Answer: 1. Turn off, unplug computer, wait about 5 minutes for cool down.
2. Open the case up, and take the heat sink off the CPU. This is done by undoing the little black lever and it should come right up. Wiggle it back and forth if it doesn't, DO NOT PULL.
3. Wipe off all old paste on heatsink and CPU with paper towel (slightly damp is ok).
4. Apply small dots in the corners of the CPU. I usually spread with my fingers, just make sure you do not get any on the motherboard. Make sure there is a thin coat that covers the silver top of the CPU.
5. Put the heatsink back on, make sure the lever lines up and the one clamp is clamped down. Then lower the lever into the lock position.

If you don't feel comfortable with doing this then don't. There is probably NO need for it.

The Scythe Infinity is the newer version of it. Works great — I'm using it to cool my C2DAnything a little cheaper?

Re:The Arctic Silver won't make that much of a difference, probably ~1-2°C under load. The problem, though, will come the first time that you plan to take the heatsink off. Just remember that you'll want to first get the processor warm, then twist it back and forth until you've broken the seal that the glue* Intel puts on their sinks is somewhat broken, before trying to remove it.

*It's not "real" glue, but it definitely sticks as well as some glues do.

Re:If you don't plan on overclocking but want to cheap your Conroe cool and quiet, there's nothing on the market better than the Artic Cooling Freezer Pro 7. $22 shipped @ provantage.com. It's a serious waste of money to buy something like a $60 HSF.

Re:The thing is, the stock cooler can be loud under load… So I'd go with a scythe ninja or infinity.
